Seeing as we are rapidly approaching the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, I am surprised and disappointed by its omission from this list.

"Over a hundred years later" gives you a little idea.

Yeah, Stonewall was a biggie. It led to all the Pride parades now in existence - watered-down, of course, but still good for tourism.

most East Village residents, well, back before that exclusively meant yuppie, refer to the riots there as the Tompkins Square Police Riot. they were so incredibly out of hand, really outrageous...badges covered with black tape, and beating everything that moved.

What about one of the most famous ones? Stonewall. That was in New York.

And don't forget that "Quiet Riot" played New York in 2002. An eyewitness describes the horror: "Quiet Riot brought the crowd to their feet as they concluded their set with "Cum on Feel the Noize." They came back for an encore and played "Bang Your Head" and everyone sang along, just like we did at the roller rink in 5th grade. I left feeling like I'd seen a good rock show, gotten my $17 worth of entertainment, and felt the noize."

What about the Draft Riots of 1863?

Three days of rioting, and the New York Times set up GATLING GUNS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.

That is pretty epic.

No mention of the July 1863 Draft Riot? Over a hundred people died. Damage estimated at $1 Million 1863 dollars. Troops had to be brought up from recently-fought Gettysberg to quell the riot.

Nothing else brings people together like a good dose of fear, hate and anger. Riots arn't a good thing, but they are a good sign that the state of things have been bad for far too long, and without resolution.
