My comments were based on 30+ years of firefighting experience. It's interesting to see imagination at work and I didn't mean to disparage the content. My training tells me to plan for the worst, but hope for the best. Plus, I got a chuckle over dozens of parachutists landing on top of the firefighters responding to take care of their fire!

So, they're basically BASE jumping?

In a dangerous situation, people screaming, fires, black smoke filling the room I doubt any novice is going to be able to jump without simply crashing to the street below - that's if they even get the thing on.

I would hate to eliminate interesting links because they come from a commercial site. This is not an ad and the company does not do business with Neatorama (as far as I know).

No need to get testy, it might actualy be a fun idea to get one if I get the urge to go base jumping from out of an office building.

i'm with quint too. can any frequent skydivers weigh in on this? i've only jumped once but i know a parachute isn't something easy to operate in confined spaces (a city of skyscrapers).

I used to work in a company that wobbles from the aftershocks of nearby tremors - this would've been a great back then since all the office workers ran down 14 storeys without stopping!

The elevator would take too long to deploy, not to mention other problems. The parachutist would need to have a place to jump from (usually, roof accesses are locked, and windows are sealed because of energy efficiency). Landing areas around most buildings are not in park-like settings as shown on the link. As far as the harness goes, I just shudder to think of untrained occupants trying to climb down the outside of a high-rise. The best way to save lives in a high-rise is to educate the occupants on what their role is when the fire alarms sound.
