Smallest Snake in the World Discovered

By John Farrier in Animal on May 6, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Leptotyphlops carlae was discovered by biologist Blair Hedges in a jungle on Barbados last year. It’s only four inches long as an adult and as thin as a strand of spaghetti.

Most of these live in jungles, but the one in the picture has been confined to quarters.

I've actually encountered a few snakes not much bigger than that (I live in West Texas).

I was very happy to read that it doesn't crawl into parts of the body that are exit only.

Agree with Emp. Tomato Catsup....I live in South Texas and I've seen these things since I was a kid. They arent all that uncommon. We had a few get in the house & mom called them "glass snakes"

I think the headline should either be

"Smallest Snake in the World so far Discovered", or
    "Even Smaller Snake Discovered"

That's a very good point, 032125. There will probably be a smaller one discovered someday.

I hate linking to wikipedia, but they have all of the important links on their page too:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptotyphlops_carlae

This species was already "discovered" and the natives knew about it for a long time. We have to stop claiming that as soon as a western scientist reaches a jungle that he or she is the first person see a species. it's taken nearly 500 years for people to finally start believing that Columbus didn't discover America.

    Cool snake though.
