The Hummingbird Pistol

Posted by John Farrier in Weapons & War on May 5, 2009 at 8:18 am

In 1914, Austrian watchmaker Georg Grabner created the Kolibri — the “Hummingbird” pistol. The smallest autoloading pistol ever made, it fires a .11 caliber bullet. He marketed it as a self-defense firearm for women to carry in their purses. More pictures and history at the link.

    I think I will buy one for my son who is going off to preschool next fall. Can never be too safe, y'know.

    Nice, but this woman prefers the comfort of a 9mm in her hand.

    yeah... hopefully .11 mm will stop an angry squirrel? i think you need a .38 at the very minimum for personal protection. but if it's me, nothing less than a 9mm.

    I don't think this would work unless you could, I dunno, put it directly up to your attacker's eyeball or something.

    Am I the only one who expected to see a gun that fires hummingbirds?

    @calma

    Is that like the trained dogs, the ones that bark and shoot bees out of their mouth?

    It kills by lodging(sp?)the bullet under the skin and the ensuing infection gets you.

    Loomis: What I was thinking...these bullets couldn't actually hurt someone enough to make them stop taking your purse or possessions.

    Why would you want to hurt a hummingbird though?

    Not for nothing but the lack of a trigger guard means you'd shoot it while it was in your purse, possibly denting your mascara case.
