This little guy looks like a Furby come to life! A commenter at YouTube identified this as the Spot-bellied Eagle Owl {wiki} which is native to southeast Asia. -via Arbroath

So good! that is way cute and I need at least 4 of them.

Agreed Ric. Quite cute indeed. But I’d say I’d need at least 8, train them to fight, and become a supervillain.

He’s cute, but I bet he could shred your fingers if he got cranky.

    Apr 7th, 2009 at 10:58 am

Lovely eyes, but she’ll never be a model with a beak like that.

    Apr 7th, 2009 at 11:15 am

Wow, those eyes are insane. Very cute though! Was loving those headrubs… so cute!

The lady in the video says:

    “more?”
    “Okay, that’s enought.”
    “You want more.”

in the local Malay language, she sounds very Malaysian. probably taken in KL Bird Park?

I’m gonna go with cute but that doesn’t mean I’d want to wake up in the middle of the night with one on my chest staring me down. Remember folks, no matter how cute they are, birds are just dinosaurs in disguise. Given half a chance they’d still eat you.

    Cute.
Would make a good buddy to the little elf owls at the rescue/education center down the road from me.

That was unreal. So cute, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bird be so receptive to human touch before!

Lol: It’s more like an owlgasm.

That’s pretty cute. I like how when it closes its eyes, they look like they’re still open, thanks to the white eyelids. Very neat adaptation.

how can you possibly think this is creepy? that is about the cutest owl i’ve ever seen and its way better than the orly owl!

  16. Mytake
    Apr 7th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Both. It’s uncanny how it really looks like it fully delights in being petted. OTOH, that’s a sharp beak and it’s most definitely not a domestic animal.

++ on J. that really made me laugh!

What an amazing bird… spooky looking, almost looks like a Jim Henson puppet with the eye-lids! Would love one as a pet :D

I’d go with cute, but would hold off on a decision until I see it rip apart a small mammal.

  23. Tami
    Apr 8th, 2009 at 1:13 am

It’s amazing that it let’s someone that close. And it’s rather cute.

I’m going to go ahead and say ‘creepy’ based partly on the fact that it makes the same sound the black smoke monster from Lost does…

    @ skidworth

    Actually, I’m Canadian, eh! :p

    Apr 8th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

@ mytake > birs like their necks scratched because it mimics mutual preening that a mate would do.

@ Christina > I think he is at some sort of rescue place. Or an indoor environment.

Thanks Frau, that’s very interesting information, I didn’t know that! Anyone discovered the name of this bird btw?

Don’t get them wet or feed them after midnight!

  33. marcnm
    Apr 9th, 2009 at 11:36 am

    Reminds me of this…

“He’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living… until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white…”

    Okay I’m done.
