Place your guess in the comment section. The first correct guess will win a free Neatorama T-shirt. If no one got it, then the funniest guess will win.

Contest rules are simple: one guess per comment, please – you can enter as many guesses as you’d like but please post no web links or URLs (let others play!)

For more clues, check out the What is it? blog. Good luck!

Update 4/4/08 – That was too easy! Here’s the answer: A corn sheller, used to remove the kernels from the cob, patent number 605,934. Congrats to Beretta who got it right, right from the get go!

It's a cotton gin, to remove the seeds from cotton, but instead of the large ones this is a hand held one fluff of cotton at a time kind of guy.

It takes the kernels off the skin...er, I mean cob. My grandma used to make me use one of these in Mexico, then put the kernels through a fine grinder. And all for what...to feed chickens, damn those chickens!

Definitely a corn sheller. Removes the kernels from a dried ear of corn. I've used one myself.

  52. jason d. covington
    April 2nd, 2009 at 12:25 pm

It's a "corn grinder." It's used to remove the kernels from the corn cob. When my Mum was in 2nd grade, she got her hand caught in this exact model. Didn't do much damage but there was blood everywhere, according to her. She used the resulting scars to tell her left hand from her right for the next few years. The chickens, who were fed the bloody corn, didn't seem to mind the extra flavoring.

    Ice grinder.
Or a meat grinder, but that's already been said...

Corn sheller. My parents in Romania still use one of those.

  55. Randall
    April 2nd, 2009 at 12:43 pm

It is not a meat grinder! It is a musical instrument, called a Krutchenatoria No. 7. It was played in the 1860's by traveling musicians throughout europe. Seen in marketplaces and streetcorners, they fell into disfavor by their gradual association with harlotry, eventually being banned by writ of a papal bull.

Its sound, when played properly, is curiously arousing.

My dad has a couple of these. It's meant to be used for removing corn kernels (uncooked of course, and generally field corn) from the cob, although another creative use he has for them is removing the outer husks from black walnuts. Talk about a yucky black-stained mess.

It's a grinder. There's a piece inside that you can switch out for different grind, uh, resolution. Grind meat or grain, chop nuts, make baby food... we had one when I was a kid. We didn't use it that often because Mum found it was a pain to get the thing clean after.
