Pop-Up Garage

Forget a 3-car garage. The new status symbol for the haves in London is this £40,000 pop-up garage by Cardok:

The £40,000 parking spots can be hidden beneath a flowerbed, lawn, or even another parking space.

Owners simply press a button on a keyring to raise they car out of the ground much like the rocket launching apparatus in Thunderbirds.

There is already a four month waiting list to get the sci-fi style parking space installed and bosses of Cardok – the company behind the hydraulic platforms – say orders are pouring in faster than they can build them.

It's one thing to not have the car start in the morning, but it's another to have the lit break that raises it out of the driveway. If well maintained though they are an excelent way to manage space in city housing areas where it is condensed and limited.

What happens if it snows more than a few feet overnight? Wouldn't there be some sort of weight distribution limit thing?

Cool idea-- But what if there's ice covering the ground/opening? I'd hate having to spend time breaking the ice off.

I think I saw this in one of the Wallace and Gromit films...

Pretty nifty but I had not considered some of the logistical problems one may face as pointed out above. Probably best somewhere that does not snow.

What London really needs is a way to put public transport underground.

    Oh wait.

    lol@ Kalel

If in a place with no snow (or flooding for that matter), this would be a good wait to prevent theft.

Unless, I guess, the thieves figured out a way to hack the garage-raising signal.

Lets see, it can lift a car, but you're worried that it won't be able to lift a car + a few square feet of snow?

That's like wondering if it's mean to the horse you're riding if you pack an extra water bottle.

"There is already a four month waiting list"

So, that's,...what? Five installs, maybe ten?

This is barely a passing interest, let alone a fad.

It could lift the snow without any problem but would still be a hassle

In England it would flood, in Canada it would freeze up. Neat, though, and if strong enough, you could lift a second car on top.
