It’s kind of fun to watch how many times Judy Garland does NOT appear in the film. The scene where Dorothy topples into the pigpen is actually double Bobbie Koshay as is Dorothy opening the farm door (although it is Garland who steps into technicolor) to Munkinland. All close up shots of the ruby slippers, including the famous zapping of the witch fingers (also Margaret Hamiltons double) are not Garlands feet and legs but her double. The black and white striped stockings of the dead witch, that shrivelled up and disappeared, foreshadowed Louis B. Mayer’s belief that black and white movies were also dead.

Exactly, shadowfirebird. Nice coincedences, but that’s pretty much all they are, because we want to see them. I have to admit, it would be cool if it were all on purpose, but when you consider that a good bit of Dark Side is meant to be about Syd Barrett, which they have publically stated, having it sync to a 1939 Judy Garland movie as well seems like a bit too much to do. I love them and think they are genius, but that’s just a lot of work for something that they aren’t openly admitting. Besides, the album would have certainly been longer and run through the entire length of the movie if they were being that ambitious.

Good point too, about it working with any Floyd album. I may have to try it on a night that I have nothing better to do. I think The Final Cut would be a great album to try and sync up to this. Certainly would be creepy, and there is an over the rainbow refrence on that album as well.

I honestly don’t see the munchkin death at all. It looks like a white thing falling and then if you look closer you can see the big dark shape of a bird in the shape of the tree, and you realize it was just moving it’s wing. Then it ruffles the other wing. :/ hmm.

as far as the suicide does, i have seen different copies that have it and ones that don’t. I own a VHS one that i got long ago when i was a kid. you can see the silhouette of someone walking up stairs then fall and walk back up and start swinging. My friend had a DVD version and it had a bird walking down the brick road during the same part with no silhouette.

re: Pink Floyd: This also works with any Floyd album taken at random and pretty much any movie taken at random.

The other movie people generally cite is 2001: A Sapce Oddessy.

It’s a function of the style of music, plus the way our minds work — we’re basically set up to see correlations and patterns, whether they are there or not.

Which is not to say that it isn’t a cool coincidence.

There was a cut scene from the movie, where Dorothy was being held prisoner, and she sings a reprise of Over the Rainbow. I read that Judy Garland sang the part so heartbrokenly, the scene was decided to be too sad to leave in.

There are tons of sync-ups in the Dark Side of Oz. Why would Alan Parsons, who produced the album, have inserted basically nothing instrumentals, particularly “On The Run”, which plays over “Over the Rainbow”? Hmm. OTR…and it ends perfectly with the clock chimes when the film cuts to the evil witch on her bicycle.

Also, what does a rainbow have to do with the dark side of the moon? I don’t know, either. But there’s one on the album cover. I could go on and on about this.

If it works, then it’s coincidental. Everything that happens in the movie that is coincidental with the album is makes it work.

“Balanced on the biggest wave,race towards an early grave” -> She’s balancing on the fence when she falls.

The witch appears riding on the bike right when the song “Time” starts with all the alarms going off -> Alert! Alert! The bad guy’s coming!

The song “Money” starts with all the cash register sounds just as she opens the door to the color world of OZ -> see what alex said about the monetary standard and the OZ abbrev. for “ounce”.

That’s just the first couple of parts.

Neat post (love the bolded format, Stacy) - one thing I always remember about the Wizard of Oz is that L. Frank Baum's original work is often interpreted as an allegory of the political and economic aspects of life in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Imageries to support this interpretation is abound in the book: the silver slipper is supposed to symbolize the silver monetary standard. Even the name "OZ" is the abbreviation for "ounce." (Baum denied that his book is anything more than a fairy tale, however). Interesting reads on the Oz populism theory can be found here and here.

I found that the Pink Floyd thing really only works with the Scarecrow and “Brain Damage”, but the rest of it, while it has a creepy feel to it, I don’t think that it’s anything but coincedental.
