Finally, a car that flies

After years of being the staple of science fiction movies and cartoons, the flying car is finally here.  The team at Terrafugia Transition have designed a car that changes into a plane in 30 seconds.  It runs on regular unleaded gas, and can be yours for $194,000.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a story of some millionaire who buys the thing then two days later ends up crashing it.

These crop up every few years, and are always fun to watch.

Pretty cool! If these were widely available a lot of people would be getting their pilot licenses.

It’s definitely a cool idea but what happens if it actually makes it mainstream? I wouldn’t want to walk outside during rush hour. It’s one thing to crash into another car on the ground. It’s a completely different ballgame when one aircar crashes into another aircar. Donnie Darko anyone? (Obviously not the time distortion element of the movie… just the idea of a car falling through the roof of your house :) )

I hope the climb rate is better than the test flight indicated. And is it legal on the roads? Getting a vehicle type-certified ain’t trivial.

Fugly and Impractical, no wonder they used MIT engineers (Go Bears).

Here’s a link to Terrfugia’s youtube channel, several videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/TerrafugiaInc

The test flight video they have shows a horrible climb rate, unless it was a touch and go.

Finally here? Am I the only person who remembers the Taylor Aerocar, the Waterman Aeromobile or even the Flying Pinto??

Ignoring safety concerns, this is still a really bad idea. Cars and planes have very different engineering requirements. You end up with a machine which is a bad car and a worse plane.

As long as you’re not looking at it, it appears to be a fine vehicle.

That flight was actually flown here, in my hometown. It happened to be the same day I left for vacation (March 5th). But it was done well in advance of my trip to the airport.
