The "custard apple"--or cherimoya--is actually quite well known here in California.

Historically, about 70 percent of the entire crop are grown on one farm/ranch in Southern California.

It's a very tasty treat, rather like a durian without the spikes and odor.

Gosh, this brings back so many memories! :) I recognize a lot of the booths and pictures from when I was in Taipei last year... makes me hungry for Taiwanese food! :) I wonder if the photographer got a chance to visit the other night markets in Taipei too--this one is the biggest, but I like Ximen the best :)

Very cool post, The picture of the dried pig meat totally put me off though. It kept reminding me of that urban legend where that girl makes those rice krispies and serves them to everyone and they love it..but..but..the secret ingredient was MAGGOTS!

Walking through these markets you feel an energy that you just don't get in the malls and regular parts of the city wherever you go. The open stalls, the smell of food and the chatter of people all in one place realy gives you the feeling of the culture when your in it.

Holy crap I'm having some serious flashbacks! I've been to Shilin three of four times and I actually recognize some of the specific stands in the pictures. I used to go to the Nan-Shih-Jiao night market almost nightly, and this post brings back all those memories! I am surprised that you mentioned the "stinky tofu" (which really stinks, but tastes great...) but didn't put up a picture!

Great post! Dying of nostalgia currently...

Custard apples actually are readily available in the US. They're known by their Spanish name, Cherimoyas and are native to Peru. I used to see them at farmer's markets, Whole Foods, pretty much everywhere. I only saw them called 'custard apples' when I moved to Australia.
