It is amazing how often people who dress the set for movies don't know how to properly set up a chess board. (Black square in the top right). It would be really cool to see an article on all the film scenes that got it wrong.

Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov are actually the subject of a musical written in the 70s, by Tim Rice and a member of ABBA. It's just called 'Chess' and is a wonderful show.

I was thinking "D" is for dollar bill - dog is a bit too broad :)

Re: Deep Blue - it's not unusual for a chess player to have a team of experts analyzing the opponent between games, so perhaps it's kind of like re-programming Deep Blue.

The thrust of computer chess player now is in the software, not the hardware. In essence that "200 million positions per second" is now kind of bunk.

Chess is as elaborate a waste of human intelligence as you can find outside an advertising agency.

Bizarre!

I was going to ask if people thought that Bobby Fischer was the inspiration for General "Buck" Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove!

From the sounds of it though Fischer's rant about bodily fluids came in 1977, 13 years after Strangelove.

A case of life imitating art or was this type of coldwar paranoia quite common at the time? I suppose it all stems from anti-communist propoganda. Anyone know of any propaganda at the time that was specifically about bodily fluids?!

Anyway - great article!

The Turk has been featured quite a few times on Neatorama. I'd be interested to see a match of Chess Boxing, but mostly for examining the choices the players make at chess after having received numerous blows to the head.

I've always thought chess was not a wargame, but a game of court intrique. The white kiing is the ruling king and the black seeks to usrp the white. Bishops are the princes of the clergy, knights the noble class, and rooks the army. The queen is the most influential member of the court and pawns are everyone else. The struggle is over influence, and each side seeks to remove the influental member of the opposing side from the court. While a strategy game, it does not represent military battle, but internal politics, which is a struggle that never ceases. Chess would have been a fine tool to train young princes on the concepts of court politics.

Point of information: Deep Blue did not really beat Kasparof on it's own.

IBM *reprogrammed Deep Blue* between games so that it would not fall for traps Kasparov had set it earlier. In effect, Blue had help from a team of experts.

Kasparov claimed that the programmers were even aiding Blue during games. We can dismiss this as a typical Kasparof ploy -- except perhaps that IBM refused to hand over machine logs, and dismantled Blue very quickly afterwards...

This reminded me of the video of Derren Brown playing chess against nine people simultaneously and beating the majority of them. (Of course he has a trick!)
