World Pancake Stack Record

By Miss Cellania in Food & Drink, World Records on Feb 24, 2009 at 12:04 pm

That’s a lot of pancakes! 672 of them, to be exact, and a pair of chefs at a Scottish hotel think the stack of pancakes may get them into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Sean McGinlay and Natalie King of Glasgow’s Hilton Grosvenor hotel measured their pancake tower at 29.5 inches (75cm) – beating the current title by 0.4in.

The chefs mixed about 100 eggs, more than 17 pints of milk, 11lbs of flour and 6.6lbs of butter for the challenge, a hotel spokeswoman said.

The hotel’s general manager Stuart Nelson said: ‘It was a bit shaky towards the end but somehow we managed to pull it off.

The current pancake stack record is 29.1 inches, set by a Slovenian team last year. Link -via J-Walk Blog

Those don’t look like “American” style pancakes, but rather more like what in the States we might call “Swedish” pancakes. I say this because 672 of the American ones would stack much much higher than 30in.

I could make it about 1/7 the way through that stack before I had to roll myself home. Is this in honor of national pancake day? Free shortstack at IHOP to support Children’s Miracle Network!

We’re three posts in and no one has yet whined about this being a disgusting waste of food.

stupidlogicman, in the UK, people generally do the “Swedish” pancakes, though Scotland I hear is the exception to the rule (correct me if I am wrong, anyone). I agree though, they do look like the thinner version from the pictures. Maybe it’s because they are in a hotel restaurant?

672 American pancakes would probably be around 168″.

twoeightnine- thanks for the calculation, makes sense.

I’m now curious about the Guinness standards regarding the maximum height of the pancakes being stacked. To my mind, if there are no specific requirements regarding height or diameter or the individual pancakes, the record of 30in. could be easily broken.

29.6 inches divided by 672 = crepes not pancakes.

record only counts if you eat the entire stack after official measurement.
