Woman Makes Clothes Out of Own Hair

By Alex in Fashion on Feb 23, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Ioana Cioanca, a 71-year-old Romanian woman, is sort of a fashion extremist. Not only does she make her own clothes, she makes ‘em out of her own hair!

Ioana Cioanca, 71, from Bistrita Nasaud, grew her hair from the age of 16 until it was 40 inches long so she could weave it. [...]

"Maybe there are other women who did this but I don’t know if they have so many items. I have nine of them: a hat, a shawl, a skirt, a blouse, a raincoat, a purse, a handbag and a pair of gloves."

So how do the clothes feel? "Quite comfortable and warm," she said. Link

I don’t know how I feel about this. I want to give her props and run away screaming all at the same time.

No different from us making clothing out of animal hair.

Animal hair is less creepy to me.

In the 18th century it was quite much of a habit all over Europe to even make Jewelery (bracelets/brooches) out of human hair. My grandparents had some kind of a flower-like looking object in a picture frame made from hair, too. It makes my stomach turn every time I think of it. It is so ugly and creepy! Also quite spooky thinking that it is hair of the dead in there, somehow… uagh x-P

It was a big thing in the States during that time too, Leela. I guess in an age before photography was invented and then before it was easily available to people, this was the keepsake of choice. I agree, though, it’s creepy as all get out.

I think I will stick to wool.

    hair is hair and
    persons are animals.

    so what’s the difference?

On one level, you have a point, tate. But it’s still creepy to me because it’s human. Certainly it’s not the same, but while I am happy to wear leather made from cow, I wouldn’t wear human skin.
