Pimp My Bookcart

By John Farrier in Arts & Crafts, Book & Lit on Feb 20, 2009 at 7:44 am

Unshelved is a webcomic by Gene Ambaum and Bill Barnes about the staff of a public library. It’s a focal point of librarian subculture as it’s written from an insider point of view.

Every year for the past three years, Unshelved has hosted a contest called “Pimp My Bookcart”, wherein library staffers trick out their bookcarts in outrageous ways, such as this circus-themed cart above. Click on the link to see this past year’s winners.

That isn't quite a circus theme. It's made to look like a box of animal crackers which are in a box that looks like a circus boxcar.

I work at a library, maybe I can convince my fellow librarians to pimp a book cart. That'd be fun.

I've worked in libraries in NY, CO and CA since 1991, and everywhere they are called "trucks". Never book carts. Just so you know.

They call them BookCarts here in KC.

Hi, I'm part of the team that made the animal crackers box. If there are any libraries thinking of doing this, go for it! 'twas hugely fun, and we are looking forward to doing it again this year.

Oh, and because they could only post a limited number of photos, here are some more detailed ones of ours:

I work at a library in Ontario Canada, and pretty much everyone flip flops from bookcarts to book trucks.
