A Guaranteed Way to Get Arrested

Posted by Queuebot in Arts & Crafts, Fashion on February 19, 2009 at 9:32 pm

Here’s a luggage set that’ll raise eyes at the airport. Designed by French artist PinkWolf, these attractive, satirical carrying cases feature molded gun, knife and axe designs on their exterior.

You can get a better look of the cases by visiting the artist’s website. The site’s in French, so if you speak the language you’re in luck. But if you’re like me and speak only two languages – English and bad English – there are plenty of pretty-shiny designs and pictures to look at.

Ireland's Worst Driver Finally Caught

Posted by Queuebot in Funny, Odd News on February 19, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Prawo Jazdy has become the bane of every Irish police officer’s life over the past few years, racking up countless fines and traffic offenses. Whenever officers pulled the offender over, they were given a different address so the police didn’t connect him to the other crimes.

Now however, police have managed to catch up with Prawo, and they’ve discovered an embarrassing truth as to why they have never caught up with him before.

When translated into English, the name Prawo Jazdy, becomes "Driving License" It seems officers pulling over Polish driving offenders have been mistakenly noting down what they thought was the offender’s name, but in fact were reading the title on the card. Officers have been warned to take more care during traffic stops in the future

“Having noticed this, I decided to check and see how many times officers have made this mistake.

“It is quite embarrassing to see that the system has created Prawo Jazdy as a person with over 50 identities.”

The officer added that the “mistake” needed to be rectified immediately and asked that a memo be circulated throughout the force.

20 of the Strangest Medical Syndromes Ever

Posted by Queuebot in Medicine on February 19, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Foreign accent syndrome, exploding head syndrome, werewolf syndrome, alien hand syndrome … walking corpse syndrome? Have you heard of any of these baffling (but completely real) medical conditions?

Werewolf Syndrome: Hypertrichosis, or werewolf syndrome, is a medical condition that causes the excessive growth of body hair — typically on the upper body, including the face. There are only 50 or so documented cases, and sufferers generally acquire it through genetic inheritance.

A Rare Act of Sportsmanship

Posted by Queuebot in Sports on February 19, 2009 at 8:28 pm

The Associated Press has an amazing and touching story of one basketball team’s rare act of sportsmanship. It happened during a high school basketball game between the DeKalb, Illinois Barbs and Milwaukee Madison. It was the third friendly meeting between the two teams, and both planned a pizza party afterwards. However, one player from Madison was dealing with a personal tragedy and the game itself was almost never played:

Hours earlier, the mother of Milwaukee Madison senior captain Johntel Franklin died at a local hospital. Carlitha Franklin had been in remission after a five-year fight with cervical cancer, but she began to hemorrhage that morning while Johntel was taking his college ACT exam.

Her son and several of his teammates were at the hospital late that afternoon when the decision was made to turn off the life-support system. Carlitha Franklin was just 39.

She was young and they were real close," said Milwaukee coach Aaron Womack Jr., who was at the hospital. "He was very distraught and it happened so suddenly he didn’t have time to grieve.

Womack was going to cancel the game, but Franklin told him he wanted the team to play. And play they did, even though the game started late and Milwaukee Madison dressed only eight players.

During the second quarter, Johntel came directly from the hospital to root his teammates on, and decided he wanted to play.  This created a unique foul situation: not being on the pre roster and playing meant a technical foul and two free throws for the opposing them.

In a rare act of sportsmanship, the opposing team’s player deliberately missed the free throws, and this gave Franklin and the Madison players the inspiration to win the game

Why You Shouldn't Cheat On Your Spouse Using Facebook

Posted by Queuebot in Blog & Internet, Crime & Law on February 19, 2009 at 8:24 pm

This should go without saying, but for those who are thinking of cheating on their spouses, check this story out.

After traveling for 9 hours on a journey from his home in South Yorkshire to North Scotland, Stuart, 39, was ready for an exciting sexual weekend with Emma, the attractive twenty-something he had been exchanging provocative messages with on a nightly basis via Facebook.

When he arrived at a farm in a remote area of Aberdeen where Emma had told Stuart she lived, he found the place run down, locked up, and deserted. Moments later, Emma texted him explaining that she had been delayed at work and that he would have to wait for her.

So he waited and waited inside of his car for three hours.

As the day shifted into night, Staurt was becoming increasingly anxious and he decided to give Emma a call to see when she would be home.

He dialed the number he had been texting, but when he heard the ringer stop he was horrified to hear a man with a Liverpool accent answer and say, “Hello Stuart, do you remember us? It’s them Scouse lads who threw you in the pool. You’ve been framed.”

ADD OCD DIY? Obsessively Organized-by-Color Bookshelves

Posted by Queuebot in Home & Garden on February 19, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Call it art, call it obsession, but the results are a rainbow of awesome to be sure. Some of these were done as personal pet projects but one in particular involved the reorganization of an entire store to fit into one big color spectrum of books. Practical? Perhaps not. Appealing? On an aesthetic level: absolutely.

Some of us are more particular about the appearance of our interiors than others – perhaps to a fault. Sick of seeing your books sloppily organized by type, or, worse yet, having them randomly disorganized across a series of bookcases? Sorting your favorite volumes by color may just satisfy that too-organized part of yourself.

Sit on a Masterpiece: the Mona Lisa Chair

Posted by Queuebot in Arts & Crafts, Home & Garden on February 19, 2009 at 7:24 pm

A parody, spoof or useful seating device – you choose. The Mona Lisa chair is certainly humorous, particularly as you will find yourself sitting right on the famous woman herself.

The frame becomes the framework for the chair – and the possibilities of adapting and customizing the classic image are endless. Next up: Van Gogh benches?

The Shakers used to hang their chairs on the wall to get them out of the way when they needed to shake. We have also previously shown Dror Benshetrit’s neat cantilevered chair that flattened out and hung on the wall. Now Korean designer Kwang Hoo Lee does them one better by turning the chair into a work of art.

Jackson's Junk to be Sold at Auction

Posted by Stacy in Odd News on February 19, 2009 at 6:52 pm

I guess this is proof that Michael Jackson thought pretty highly of himself at one point. This commissioned portrait of Jackson alongside luminaries such as Einstein, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and… E.T.?… will be for sale when Jackson gets rid of a bunch of his curiosities in April. Other objects include the famous white glove, the gates from Neverland Ranch, the scissor gloves from Edward Scissorhands and the robot mask from Jackson’s Moonwalker movie.

A fascinating video clip depicting the 12 billion years life cycle of a Class G type star in 6 minutes (actually 6:29). From its conception, birth, death – and the deaths of surrounding celestial bodies – and then its remnants contributing to the growth of future stars and planets are all shown. No narration just great music and animation so sit back and relax.

* Interesting note for those who don’t know: our Sun (Latin name Sol) is a Class G type star.

Giant Rat Caught in China

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animal on February 19, 2009 at 1:38 pm

A six-pound rat was caught in Fuzhou, Fujian, China. The ratcatcher is Mr. Xian, who grabbed the rat after he saw a crowd gathered around it.

He told local Chinese newspapers that he thought the rat might be a valuable specimen, or a rare species, and had to muster up his courage before grabbing its tail and picking it up by the scruff of its neck.

“I did it, I caught a rat the size of a cat!” he shouted out afterwards, according to the reports. Mr Xian is believed to still be in possession of the animal, after stuffing into a bag and departing the scene.

The rat had a 12-inch tail and teeth and inch long! Forestry officials who saw pictures think it’s a Chinese bamboo rat, which rarely grow over ten inches long, but cannot be sure until they examine the rat itself. Link -via Arbroath

Liquid Water Found on Mars!

Posted by Queuebot in Science & Tech on February 19, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Here’s some good news for all the space buffs out there: NASA’s Phoenix lander may have captured the first images of liquid water on Mars. Photographs appear to show water droplets that splashed onto the craft’s leg during landing.

“The controversial observation could be explained by the mission’s previous discovery of perchlorate salts in the soil, since the salts can keep water liquid at sub-zero temperatures. Researchers say this antifreeze effect makes it possible for liquid water to be widespread just below the surface of Mars, but point out that even if it is there, it may be too salty to support life as we know it.”

Things You Probably Don't Need #8

Posted by Stacy in Gadget on February 19, 2009 at 11:44 am

As reader Casie reminded me, it’s about time for another Things You Probably Don’t Need. Now, this thing is an Archie McPhee product, and you could make a very convincing argument that you don’t actually need anything at Archie McPhee. But you really don’t need this, especially not for $9.50:

I mean, come on: gerbil underpants, sure. Chipmunk underpants, definitely. But squirrel underpants? That’s just ridiculous.

W00t! It’s time for our collaboration with the ever-awesome What Is It? blog – this week’s mystery object is this gun: can you tell us what it is for? (It has a very specific function)

Place your guess in the comment section – the first to guess correctly will get a Free Neatorama T-Shirt. If no one got it, then the funniest guess will win. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many times as you wish.

For more clues, check out the What is it? Blog – good luck!

Update 2/20/09 – The answer is A Rokuoh-Sha Type 89 machine gun camera, used to train Japanese aviators in aerial gunnery. The first guess that’s specific enough was #15, by “Give the shirt to the funniest answer :) ” So, per that request, the free shirt goes to: Melphistopheles for his guess of early colonoscopy device!

Congrats Mel – and thank you to everybody for their awesome guesses. That was fun!

Bill Zeman’s daughter is the Tiny Art Director. She tells him what to draw and then tells him just exactly how much she hates it. Bill has been recording her comments and posting them with his art since she was two and a half.

Here’s a sample:

The Brief: Purple Gatorade [Rosie's Fish]
The Critique: Dad, that doesn’t look like Purple Gatorade. Only mine looks like Purple Gatorade. You’re going to scan it, and then when you’re done with it, it’s going to be scrappled up and thrown in the garbage. And then mine will be our final picture.

No Kissing Zone

Posted by Queuebot in Travel & Places on February 19, 2009 at 3:38 am

At Warrington Bank Quay Station in the UK there are designated places for travelers to kiss, and not to kiss.  Taxi drivers complained about kissing couples taking too long in the drop-off zone, so Colin Daniels, the chief executive of the Warrington Chamber of Commerce suggested putting up No Kissing signs to prevent traffic congestion.

So now if you want to kiss, you have to go over to the Kissing Zone, several yards away from the drop-off area.  You can see the BBC News video here.

“It was all a bit of fun. But now Virgin Trains have agreed to put them up as part of the refurbishment. They may seem frivolous but there is a serious message underneath.”

Knit Your Way To Good Health

Posted by Queuebot in Arts & Crafts, Medicine on February 19, 2009 at 3:35 am

Do you have trouble finding your keys?  Can’t remember names and faces?

The BBC News reports on a study to be presented to the American Academy of Neurology that concludes that people who keep themselves mentally active between the ages of 50 and 65 have a better chance of delaying the onset of dementia than people who watch television.

Reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, quilting are all activities that keep your brain active.

Spending a significant amount of time watching television, researchers found, may actually speed up memory loss.  So if you knit, turn off the TV.

Zzz-mailing

Posted by Queuebot in Blog & Internet, Odd News on February 19, 2009 at 3:31 am

Sleep researchers at the University of Toledo, Ohio, reported the first case of someone using the Internet while asleep.  A 44-year-old woman had gone to bed about 10 p.m., then got up a few hours later, logged on to her computer with her username and password, and composed three e-mails to friends inviting them over for drinks. She only found out about it when they called the next day to accept.

Her e-mails contained a mix of upper- and lowercase characters, were badly formatted and contained odd expressions.  One read: "Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out.  Dinner and drinks, 4 pm.  Bring wine and caviar only."  Another e-mail said only: "What the …"

Polar Twins

Posted by Queuebot in Animal, Science & Tech on February 19, 2009 at 3:27 am

Despite being separated by a distance of 7,000 miles, this ribbon worm species in the Arctic is identical to a ribbon worm species found in the Antarctic.  Scientists at the Census for Marine Life were surprised to find as many as 235 species that live in both polar seas.

This one, Pelagonemertes rollestoni, measures about 1.2 incles long. It’s got a dart attached to its tongue, which it uses to harpoon zooplankton.  Its yellow stomach reaches out to feed all parts of its body.
