The original Star Wars movie was so different from initial concept to final product that Lucas was making the story up as he went along with only the vaguest of background ideas in his mind that were easily changed constantly by things as simple as his lead artist's artist conception sketches. Case-in-point: Vader had no mask or anything until McQuarrie drew him with a breathing apparatus so that he could move through space in order to raid ships. Then the whole life-support suit/mask was born. Lucas admits this. But now, after the prequels were spawned, he wants us to believe that this sh!t was the background for the story all along.
