End of the Rainbow Finally Found

Not only is there no gold at the end of the rainbow but, frankly, driving straight toward one sounds slightly scary. No, there was no pot of gold nor any other mythical or fantastic phenomena. However, the lucky winner did get $25 playing the lottery later that evening. Coincidence? Probably. Still, this is a rare shot at a part of a phenomena almost never traceable to where it touches the ground.

Jason Erdkamp caught the shot as he travelled along a motorway in Orange County, California, in the rain last Sunday.

The end of the rainbow appeared to emerge from a stormy sky to hit the windscreen of Mr Erdkamp’s car as he drove along the northbound 341 tollroad.

As he drove along the motorway, he managed to capture other shots of the rainbow in which it appears to hit the ground.

Clearly, this was the start of the rainbow, hence the lack of gold.

I didn’t realise it was this rare, I’ve seen the start of a rainbox in Oxford, England once, but as you move towards it, it moves away.

I saw one of these in Florida once, and took a bunch of pictures. Then I lost the film roll before I could get it processed.

I have actually driven through the end of a rainbow. It didn’t move away and the it was an awesome experience. You could clearly see all the colors right as you came upon it and a bright band of white light as you passed through.

How did you upload that pic in the comments? I have a picture of a double rainbow that shows the end…almost. We were driving and the end was just off to the side so I couldn’t quite capture a picture as great as this one!

Attn: PWSCOTT 2/14/2009….. I didnt think I’d ever hear somebody say thay to have been through the end of rainbow like me! You described exactly what happened to me and what the experience was like, so i believe you. The only difference was that my whole van filled with all the colors of the rainbow to the point that for 2 or 3 seconds i couldnt even the see the road, only the bright beautiful colors. This happend to me in the Seattle, Washington area about 20 years ago. One other thing that was strange about it is that it must have been really only on my side of the 4 lane road (I-405) because their was a guy driving 2 or 3 lanes over from me that seemed to be oblivious to what had just happend when i looked over at him afterwords, and there is no way he could have not been shoked like i was (and i’m sure you were)
