What is it? Game 90

Posted by Alex in What Is It on January 29, 2009 at 7:37 am

This week’s collaboration with the What is it? Blog brings us this wonderfully strange contraption. It has a very specific (and awesome) function – can you tell us what it is for?

Place your guess in the comment section. No prize this week, so you’re playing for fame and glory only. For more clues, check out the What is it? Blog. Good luck!

Update 1/30/09 – the answer is:

A Marquardt Space Sled, designed for individual space maneuvering in the vicinity of a spacecraft, this design was never used and instead they went with the shuttle manned maneuvering unit.

No one got it right! Score one for Neatorama and the What is it? blog!

It is a space toilet. The pipe pointing at the crotch couples up to the bodily waste nozzle on a space suit.

Actually that's an early 60's concept "space taxi" for astronauts.

I remember seeing it in either the Smithsonian or the USAF Museum.....

It's a chair in which they test pilot responses under high G's.

Darn you, Kit Cloud (#1), you beat me to the punch. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw it. But I'm going to specify it only goes forwards in time, because the first thing every backward time traveler tries to do is kill Hitler, and No Hitler = No WWII, No Cold War, No Electronics, No Time Machines = Paradox, so it only goes forwards.

i was going to say it was a gaming chair but the other comments about it being a trainer is also correct. it could be a drivers ed trainer.

Yes some sort of training device. Either for pilots as someone suggested, or I will say for race cars.

I think I got it: It is the seat for the mid-air refueling booms in military tankers. The fixed booms (not the hoses with the baskets) actually require some dude to be back there and "fly" it into the plane's refueling port.

I took a nap a little while ago and actually had a dream that I figured out what this was ROFL... how sad is that...

Anyway.. in my dream, this was someone's "game chair". They rigged it up to work w/ their console games somehow *shrug*
I know that's wrong but just thought I'd share lol

Came here to submit SteveR's answer. But after looking at the picks on the "What is it?" site, I don't think that'sit, and don't have an answer.

I'll guess a cockpit for an absolute land speed record vehicle.
