I have to admit the picture of Belle & Dorothy used by the Sunday Times in the online article odesn’t show how close their looks are but there is no doubt they are identical twins. The Immigration Dept. has its rules to abide by and we realise that but surely there has to be some compassion from Minister Chris Evans. These girls were torn apart by circumstance and they have bonded in a way that even I did not expect. They need to be together and deserve the chance to do so. Only other identical twins will have some idea of how strong these bonds can be. Anyone who wants to help can do so by writing to Senator Chris Evans at PO Box 1322, West Perth WA 6872

I am an identical twin & I can tell you that you would feel very differently if you really did have a twin.

No legalities can seperate twins. Period. The bond of twins runs far deeper than technicalities and paperwork.

Hmmmm…difficult.

Australia, like anywhere, can be racist and xenophobic. Ask the Aboriginal’s. Generally, it is known as the most multi-culture, multi-race, multi-religion place on Earth.

I dispute the ‘neatness’ of this and think a better spin would have been that the local Chinese committee claim that this years ‘Chinese New Year’ was the largest in the world outside China (by the way, I find this hard to believe but it was big and ace)…however THAT is neat.

ps: they look more fraternal than identical.

And my great grandparents, who migrated here from the UK, well they should have gone right back to the UK.

Rodriguez, how many countries have you lived in? Australia has its elements of red necks like most places, but for the most part is incredibly multicultural and its citizens are quite well educated. I don’t see this article indicating any xenophobia, and for the most part think most of the responses to it were either well justified (the law has nothing to do with blood relations in the face of legal relationships) or critical of the process. I could count only about a dozen out of 114 that were fairly obvious trolls.

There are many ways to migrate to Australia, and they’re just complaining that they can’t do it quickly by family relation. There’s just no way two people, separated by their first 50 years of life, could be considered as a family. To call this xenophobic just because they’re Malaysian is ridiculous.

I don’t see the issue. The government requires that two people be legally related for immigration purposes. I can understand the lady’s distress, but for her to try to ignore the word ‘legal’ and say ‘hey, but we are related’ is just dishonest. Imagine the opposite – some kid who is adopted can’t come with their family because they’re not blood related.

The term ‘relationhship’ in this context is clearly spelt out. I don’t think this is ‘nuts’ or bureaucratic, it’s more a matter of semantics that’s getting people confused.

i actually think agree with polx that it’s legit. blood relation is meaningless if you’ve known the person for less than a year.

if i found out that i had an identical twin brother, and i met him for the first time today, and then he wanted to borrow some money or something…no way.

it’s just like how deadbeat dads are nothing compared to step fathers who raise a child. that deadbeat dad might be the biological father but the stepfather was there yo.

Hmm, so it’s not the immigration departments fault but a loophole.

Despite them being sisters by birth there is no legal reason for the sister to be allowed into Australia.

Not nice but if it were reversed then it would have far wider ramifications for people who were adopted.

Could they be taken back by their biological parents after the adoption? And if so up until what age?
