My older step brother was killed by a train while playing on a trestle the year before this movie was released, he had just turned 13. Had I known the plot of the movie I doubt I would have ever watched it. I saw it for the first time at age 14 which was 4 years after he had died. The hardest scenes to watch were when the train is behind them on the train trestle and of course when they show Ray Brower’s body. The comment about him being knocked right out of his Keds had me sobbing even more than I had already been, it struck too close to reality for me. I watched this movie because I was a huge fan of Corey Feldman and River Phoenix, they acted the roles of Teddy and Chris better than even I expected as a huge fan. It took several years before I could bring myself to watch this movie again but I am glad I did. It helped me to grieve and deal with the loss that forever changed my family in ways I wasn’t able to do so before. The movie holds a special place in my heart and my 2 oldest children have now watched it. They enjoyed seeing the way the bonds of friendship were portrayed as did I. It still takes me back to the time in my life when I was sure we’d be best friends and never grow apart. Though I still speak with them from time to time it will never be as it was when we were 12.

Thank you for this movie trivia. It brought back many bittersweet memories for me. I am going to look for a copy of the dvd so I can buy the movie. When my youngest is old enough to watch it, we will watch it together. She has a few more years until that time.

This is such a great movie, it truly sums up the whole coming of age experience. There are not many movies that I get choked up on, but at the end of this one it’s tough not to. We all experience growing up and this movie sums it up perfectly.

A few weeks ago my husband and I were visiting some friends at their house. They were flipping through the movie channels when I went into the other room. I could NOT see or hear the TV, but could hear the others speaking. I heard:

“Isn’t that River Phoenix?”

“Yeah, but who’s that one?”

So, of course, I yelled, “It’s Wil Wheaton!”

“Thanks, what’s the movie called?”

“Stand By Me!”

“Do you have the TV on?”

“No!”

They thought I was an evil genius, but it was really quite obvious. The two most likely River Phoenix movies are S.B.M. and My Own Private Idaho, in which case they would have recognized Keanu Reeves.

I hear that Kiefer uses the Method for “24″. Every day, he shoots a guy in the leg. “What’s the soup of the day at the commissary? Tell me now!”

I just watched this with my wife for her pediatrics residency adolescent psych rotation. Kiefer frightened _me_. I concede that he’s not just Donald’s son — he’s an Actor for reals.

I think it fits well, Gordie was pretty mature for his age but I think that would instead make him realize who he’s telling the story to. Play to the crowd so to speak.

I was in high school when this came out, and was an aspiring actor. I actually got an audition for the role of Ace, but when I saw the excellent performance Keifer gave after beating me, well I pretty much moved on from acting after that. Great movie that stands the time test!

@Staxeon – If I recall, he really didn’t have that much to say about it. All I remember is that he questioned at the time, and STILL questions, whether the pie-eating contest was the right story for Gordie to tell. He thought that Gordie maybe would have told a more serious, mature story, even though he was only 12.
