"It Was Every Photographer's Dream"

Posted by Queuebot in Animal on January 24, 2009 at 2:33 pm

Leopard seals are aggressive predators, and National Geo photographer Paul Nicklen didn’t quite know what to expect when he slid into the freezing Antarctic water with the largest leopard seal he’d ever seen.  The leopard seal took Nicklen’s head and camera into her mouth.  But he couldn’t believe what happened next.

Watch this video to find out.

Interesting lead-in, but the flash on National Geographic is so frustratingly un-interactive that I gave up waiting for the "punch line". There isn't even a volume control on the video, that I could see...

Yeah I didn't see the "you'll never believe what happened next" part either. Nothing happened as far as I can tell.

Great photography and story. "Felt like I'd been hit in the head with a baseball bat."

    Crikey!

I love how he tells the story when he was at the TED conference. :)

Thanks Marilyn for the correct link with the answer to "What happened next"- but both videos are awesome.

Ah dupe! That's why it sounded so familiar. I've also corrected the video link, thanks Marilyn!

The photos are amazing and listening to what happened was amazing as well. Love it when animals do the unexpected (in a good way) lol.

That's a lovely story... I've had a prejudice against leopard seals since my days as a child penguin enthusiast, but I think that put things a bit into perspective.

Ugh, leopard seals are on my list of creepy/scary animals. Also included are spiders, baboons and grizzly bears.

It's amazing the things animals do... even the dangerous ones.

That's so crazy. And the actual photographs look so unreal they're amazing!
