Hmm... What about President Jordan Lyman (Frederic March) in "Seven Days in May"? Here's a president who's facing riots at home because he dared to negotiate a nuclear disarmament treaty with the Soviets. Now the military, led by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General James Matoun Scot (Burt Lancaster), is plotting a coup.

When he finds out, what does he do? After blocking the attempt, he orders the ringleaders to resign - basically giving them a way out. After all, treason is punishable by death.

Sure, it's nice to have an Action Hero living in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But there's a lot more to politics than being a tough guy. You have to know when to stick to your guns, when to compromise, and when to let the other guy down easy.

I loved Bill Pullman in Independence Day!! His speech on top of the jeep before they all flew out was the best. Totally cheesy for sure, but definitely got you patriotic for America, even if you weren't American.

They were bombers in "Fail Safe". A wing of B-58s to be exact. I agree that it is the best dramatic portrayal of a President.

Harrison Ford, hands down. Loved the line in Air Force One: "Get off my plane," as he tosses the bad guy out the back.

It's been awhile since I've seen Fail Safe, but I could've sworn it was B-52 bombers that they couldn't contact, not a missile. Like Dr. Strangelove, only serious.

I agree, Dave should have been included. He warmed the cockles of Sigourney Weaver's heart, that has to count for something! I always feel like 'The American President' is a bit overrated... I would much more likely follow Dave and Bill Pullman than a lot of people on that list.
When they were filming his speech in Independence Day, apparently a lot of the extras thought he was actually the president, so the cheering was somewhat genuine. :D
