I’ll have to come up with a new movie then, because this is one of my faves.
(I went as Mary for Halloween a few years back)

this was an awesome article. Shaun of the Dead might be my favorite movie ever. Great trivia tidbits too. And now that you’ve alerted me to when the third movie comes out, I can’t wait for 2010

You never saw Black Books? David is practically the same character as Bernard Black.

    Jan 19th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Err, let me rephrase that. Gordon is Bernard.

Tyres from Spaced makes a cameo in Shaun, too–still dancing. If you don’t know Spaced, please rent it, because it’s amazing.

Also, I heart Dylan Moran in every way shape and form. Especially doing standup. And especially in his cameo in Notting Hill. <3

Good movie to choose for this post, its loaded with easter eggs

289: Who the hell is Gordon? There IS no character named Gordon in Shaun. There is no actor name Gordon in Shaun.

Pumble: Rent it? Freakin’ BUY it! It’s out in region 1 now.

I think the green cornetto would represent aliens? I believe the film is a road trip movie involving an alien.

Gordon is in Run Fatboy Run. As is stated above.

Very awesome trivia! Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite movies.
I love zombie flicks and throw in some clever funny humor and of course it’s classic!
One reason why I do love it though, my family and friends know I have zombie dreams quite frequently b/c unfortunatly for them, I tell them all the time lol.
One dream in particular though that I had a looooong time ago they found hilarious. In it, zombies are taking over everything, blahblah, and in the dream, I pretend to be a zombie w/ the moaning and walking etc to get away.
So yeah… that part of the movie is specially my fav heh.

Great trivia. I was never a zombie movie fan, but this movie changed all that. I can watch it over and over again. I love Hot Fuzz too, but it’s not quite Shaun of the Dead.

My mum works in the town where Hot Fuzz was shot, and we walk past the church where the reporter was spattered everytime we go there :)
Plus, in a lot of the shops, there are signs sayin “Hot Fuzz was shot here”.

re Mary the supermarket check out zombie.

I will have to go and watch it again, and you could be spot on about Landis, but in the UK there is a chain of mini markets called LONDIS.

    http://www.londis.co.uk/

it could be that it actually says that rather than Landis, or it could be them being SUPER clever.

I can not control my inner pedant.

Land Of The Dead was an original film and not a remake.

I have to diasgree with you twoeightnine. David is nothing like Bernard Black who is a raving, alcoholic bookshop owner not an anally-retentive accountant who thoroughly deserves to have his intestines ripped from his still-living carcass and eaten in front of him. ;)

Also, watch out for the kid that annoys Shaun at the start of the movie. Shaun says to him: “The next time I see you, you’re dead.”

@ xavier: the road movie about aliens is not ‘the world’s end’ but rather a flick called ‘paul’ (yay, a film named after me!) that is not part of the cornetto trilogy because edgar wright is not involved. it’s also due out in 2010.

@ moodindigo: shaun and ed both tell other characters that they’re dead and they later turn up as zombies.

i love this film. i was shaun for a costume party. bloody cricket bat and all.

Also everyone that says “you got red on you” to Shaun ends up dead.

    Jan 19th, 2009 at 9:32 am

Doesn’t everyone end up dead except for the leads and everyone on TV at the end?

Ahhh, I just realized my mistake. Thanks, rhcpaul!

@ Polx – Regarding Mary and the Landis supermarket. The actual store where Mary is filmed is an ASDA (Wal-Mart). But is was called Landis for the same reason that there is a Fulci’s restaurant. They are “nods” to horror movie directors and their respective films. Pegg and Frost did admit to this.

There is also dialogue from classic zombie films.
The scene where Ed tells Shaun’s mom “We’re coming to get you, Barbara.” And the TV news report are both taken from NOTLD.

Pegg and Frost appear as zombies in George Romero’s Land of the Dead. Kind of a reverse easter egg. :)

SoTD Best. Movie. Evar. Has anyone seen a screen shot or a behind the scenes pic of Simon and Edgar as Romero’s zombies? I’d love if you could share.

Great post! Like you, I never get tired of watching this. For Little Britain fans, Matt Lucas can be spotted as the main characters passed/greet their counterparts on their way to The Winchester.

One of my favorite parts (and there are hella!)is when Shaun and Ed are sitting on the couch watching the news and upon realizing they’ve left the door unlatched look to the right and are surprised by a zombie. Shaun’s reaction with the hands has me rollin’ every time!

When Shaun and Ed are in the Winchester after shaun and Liz split up Ed actually predicts the film

    A Bloody Mary first thing,
(Mary the girl in the garden0

a bite at the King’s Head,
    (when phillip gets attacked)

    couple at The Little Princess,
(im not sure what this is maybe picking uo liz)

    stagger back here
(pretending to be zombies to get in the winchester)
    and bang…
back at the bar for shots.
(Shooting zombies from behind the bar)

How’s that for a slice of fried gold?

No one has noticed this yet, but when they’re playing the video game on the ps2, it the camera shows the screen as they pause, but there’s a tiny bit of gameplay shown just before the pause screen, the game’s obviously (to anyone who’s played it) Time Splitters 2, and I’m pretty sure the gametype is Virus (zombies). I love that game!

    The best zombie movie ever!

Check this out.. on the DVD subtitles list there is the “zom??? track” (something like that) and instead of the normal subtitles you’ll get trivia that’s related to the scene.. for instance i didn’t realize their names were related to their fate at the end like “reborn” for Shaun or “dead” for Ed, etc.. Give it a try

Just as a last minute one, it’s really hard to see, but Chris Martin from Coldplay is actually a Zombie once Shaun and Liz escape from the Winchester. Really hard to see, but he is there!!

At the very beginning of the film (as the Studio Canal logo appears) there is a snippet of music from the original Dawn of the Dead. Which is then followed by the song “Ghost Town” by the Specials.

this was a great movie… I have to see it again this weekend now (thanks!)

but if I could I’d like to recommend Office Space for the segment.
