What is it? Game 88

Posted by Alex in Weapons & War, What Is It on January 15, 2009 at 7:50 am

W00t! (or better yet, Yikes!) Our weekly collaboration with the What is it? Blog brings us this scary looking thing. Yes, it’s a dagger, but can you guess what it is specifically for?

Place your guess in the comment section. No prize this week, so you’re playing for fame and glory. Please don’t post any URL, let others play.

For more clues, check out the What is it? Blog. Good luck!

Update 1/17/09 – the answer is: A katar dagger from India, a type of short punching sword used to pierce armor in hand to hand combat.

Congratulations to Kit Cloud who got it right off the bat. Must’ve been too easy for you guys!

It's a punching-dagger. Instead of holding it like a conventional knife, you hold it more like brass knuckles. Nasty stabby thing...

Pfff... it's not a Qatar (or whatever), it's a Ritualistic Klingon Blade. It's used to neuter pet Targs and it's called a Hack'Ball.

KIT CLOUD got it right off the bat. I'll also add that the Katar can used as a parrying weapon in your off-hand for defensive purposes to supplement the sword in your main hand.

The weapon is an East Indian Katar, sometimes known as a Mahratta dagger. The katar is of Rajput origin but its use was widespread. Rajput and Mughal miniature paintings of the period bear testimony to this fact.

Since the katar is gripped by the crossbars, the blow is delivered as a punch, leading to the name ‘punch-dagger.

A katar. Middle Eastern / Indian "punching dagger". This looks like a fixed blade rather than a scissors blade (with scissors blades, you can squeeze the handles together and two hidden blades would open giving a forked, three pronged weapon shape). Scissors katars are effective for catching / parrying a foe's blade, and for doing maximum damage upon landing a successful hit (open the katar when it's inside your opponent).

Personally, I think a gun would be a wiser choice.

  31. Corinne
    January 15th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Yeah. Others already guessed it. It's a punch dagger/push dagger, whichever name you prefer. Like brass knuckles on with a dagger. Causes a bit more damage but is harder to conceal.

    January 15th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Well yes this is a Dagger , But ? I see something like this on the TV , and one could squeeze the Handle
and it open the Dagger Blade and there was and other Dagger under the outer blade , so you had 3 Dagger Blades

can this be that type as well ?

This is a Jersey Kaufmann splitter. In the late 30's the Banana split became all the rage and the speed and dexterity of the soda jerk who built the split made the soda fountain's fame. Wendel Kaufmann of Kaufmann drugs, nephew of the owner, invented this specialized knife for splitting bananas in record time. Wendel could make a split in 22 seconds! Soon every soda fountain in the US eastern seaboard had to have a splitter, and Wendel grew prosperous, but lost it all in foreign investments because of WW2. Wendel died penniless and alone in 1962.

Oh c'mon, how is this even hard? So clearly a katar, commonly used in 18th century Persia, re-appropriated in the late 20th and 21st century in popular culture use for Assassins and Ninjas.

i saw it on ripley's believe it or not once, it's a katar. they were used by bandits or whatever to stab into their victim. then they'd open it like scissors, while still inside the body. then they'd twist the blade. just thinking about it scares the crap out of me.

I don't know what the name is. It's in the Jungle Book movies from the 90's though. You stab it into a persons abdomen and then it opens releasing two outer blades to eviscerate the insides.

This is a jamadhar used in 14-19 century in India. It is often mistaken to be a Katar. According to a book i have a Katar is actually a dagger that is very common in India and what happened was when Akbar the Great(1542-1605) completed the Ain-e-Akbari(a encyclopedia of some sort) the picture was draw incorrectly, which lead to the invention of the Jamadhar! The Jamadhar also lead to the invention of the patta, which is similar to the jamadhar but longer and more sword-like such as a gautlet added to it.
