Hibachi Onion Volcano

“Slice an onion, separate into rings, and stack it to make a cone. Then
fill with oil and water, and get annoying restaurant patrons to lean in
really close with their cameraphones to see what percentage of their
eyebrows you can remove. Optionally, add soy sauce for lava.”

    Video works for me. :)

I’ve seen the volcano several times, but never with the soy sauce lava. That was pretty awesome.

Teppan, not hibachi. The soy sauce lava is new to me as well, though overall the cooks I’ve seen do this had much more style.

Then he just throws it out.

It would be more impressive if he hadn’t wasted the food just for a bit of razzle-dazzle.

It’s nice that they filmed it… I notice everytime i go to Benihana that a lot of people ignore the art of it… they just keep talking in their normal conversations. It’s really frustrating, the chefs are spectacular!

It’s commen in other places as well.

At every hibachi grill I’ve been to (they all do the volcano trick but I’ve never seen it with soy sauce “lava”) the chef then cuts up the onion to use in the stir fry.

The best trick I’ve seen a hibachi chef do is flipping a raw egg into his hat unbroken and leaving it there the entire time he prepared food.

There must be a lot of people who’ve not seen this before, otherwise why on earth is this being posted to Neatorama?

@Rocky Rook – That’s exactly what I thought. When I saw it, I said “Are you kidding me?!”

Are people that myopic that they assume everybody in the world has been to this Benihana restaurant?

I’ve never been to a Benihana!

From what I understand it’s the showy 1970s idea of Japanese food, so I’ve always stuck with local places.

That’s it! Now I’m craving Japanese steakhouse food. It’s too bad I’ve already agreed to make dinner at home tonight.
