A great many of the “mistakes” listed on IMDb are only visible for one or two frames, so it would appear that somebody went through the whole film using the ‘Step’ function on their media players.

On the commentary for “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” John Cleese mentioned that one take, that he thought was funnier, didn’t get used because something was visible on the far side of the frame. Cleese was telling the director and editor, “They’re attention is going to be over HERE, they’re not going to notice that over THERE!”

When I read these silly lists, and check up on them, Cleese was right: I would have NEVER noticed these things if somebody hadn’t been anal enough to point them out.

Semi said what I was about to say. You edit a film not for continuity, but for the right emotional beat to progress the film. Continuity errors are always going to happen, and they’re more common on big budget films because there’s so many God damn people behind the camera that one scene will take forever to shoot.

It’s a frustrating part of film-making, but there’s no way around it. An editor has to use the best shot for a scene, and usually an actor appropriately delivering a line or emoting in a way that best relates to the situation is more important that if his hands were in or out of his pockets.

But yeah, I heard the new Indy flick was a bore anyway.

But, Rocky, sometimes continuity errors and other mistakes prevent us from entering that state of escapism.

It’s called “suspension of disbelief”. A good movie can make you not worry about the errors. A bad movie is only made worse by such errors.

There is a scene in Steel Magnolias with Julia Roberts getting a manicure and she puts her hand on the table twice. Drives me crazy everytime I watch it.

I find it fascinating that people want movies to be flawless and “real” … Don’t we go to movies to escape reality? So these little errors shouldn’t matter.

Why are people fascinated by silly continuity mistakes? It’s got to be the most boring topic in the world, right up there with actors talking about acting.

Who cares if the protagonist’s hands were here in one shot, and there in another? That stuff happens all the time, and sometimes it has nothing to do with the continuity person not doing their job. Sometimes in editing a shot is used out of its intended sequence, or shots are jumbled around because it works better in an order that doesn’t match the shooting script. Big deal.

A much bigger mistake was the stupid “magnetic shotgun pellets” in Indiana Jones. Now that’s just plain stupidity, and no excuse for that.

Continuity is a specialization job in film production. You’d think Spielberg would have the best on hand, but then again, he really didn’t want to do this movie. It was all Georgie.

Its not an editing mistake in Crystal Skull, its a continuity error. Hard to catch while shooting. But if the material is compelling enough, then they are hard to notice. Obviously the material wasn’t compelling enough.

To add to the “The Dark Knight Mistake” in the same scene where Batman is slamming The Joker against the wall, you can see the Jokers hand change, during one clip his thumb is up and during the next clip his hand is just ‘flopped out’ because of Batman overpowering him, his hand changes every time the scene splits between him and Batman

Mistakes like these wouldn’t have been made in this amount of high budget films before CG, and now that movies depend on it we are too lazy to touch up our mistakes.

The biggest mistake in the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the plot.
