Dancing Seals

By Alex in Animals & Pets on Dec 27, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Meet Fred and Ginger (yes, after Astaire and Rogers), two seals at the North Carolina Zoological Park that love to dance! Apparently, they also dance because they love fish:

The secret of the perfect dancing partnership, in this case at least, seems to be a healthy diet based largely on seafood.

‘They eat fish and lots of it,’ added Miss Abbott.

‘They get some in the morning and then in the afternoon they go through a training exercise where they are rewarded with more fish.’

Is this weird to anyone else? They are trained to act cute and dance together. Usually, these animals are territorial and don’t make contact underwater unless it is through a threat or an attack. I really wonder if they want to be close to each other. I wonder if one is thinking, “I hate this guy but there’s good fish in this gig.”

It’s a fish gig. I’m sure they find no enjoyment in the dancing.

They work hard for the fish.

    Dance little seals, dance.

Amuse the paying customers. It is after all, your sole reason for existence, the role we have given you.

Dance because we’ve associated obedience with food, disobedience with denial of same.

    Dance little seals, dance.

Be grateful for your place in our underwater prison camp.
