@Oliver

So if it takes an expert with a microscope to identify a produced diamond, why do I care? As long as it looks fine from say arms length I don't give a shit.

Great article! Well researched! I agree that a trained diamond grader or gemologist with a good microscope and maybe a few other tools would be able to differentiate between synthetics and natural diamonds. One of the more recent synthetics is called Moissanite. It's slightly yellowish, but a pretty decent substitute.

I have been panning for gold in an aluveal fan of gravel. I keep finding garnets and a clear stone that I think may be diamonds. there are also saphires. how can I tell if they are diamonds?

re:There’s an interesting story about Stanley Rifkin, who embezzled a lot of money from Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles back in the late 70s.

A lot of things are different in regards to the market today than 30(+) years ago. Fraudulent "investment diamond deals" were also very common in the early 1980s and that again was over 20(+) years ago...The specific dollar value and scarcity of a solitary $100,000 plus diamond is what makes this different than attempting to sell a "lot" of diamonds. The market today and going forward is building a position of increasing values.

@Oliver: <em>As a former diamond grader, I can say with confidence that no imitation or even lab grown diamonds can fool an expert with equipment. A gem scope, and a tool or two, and I can spot any fake.</em>

That's no longer the case with diamonds "grown" by chemical vapor deposition. It's basically growing diamonds atom by atom.

De Beers spent a lot of money into its Gem Defensive Programme, looking into how to tell synthetic diamonds apart from natural diamonds (you need a Raman photoluminescence spectroscope - but even this was disputed by experts).

Re: investment grade diamond priced above $100,000 - There's an interesting story about Stanley Rifkin, who embezzled a lot of money from Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles back in the late 70s. He wired $10 million to an overseas account, bought diamonds with the money, then smuggled them back to the US. Rifkin then tried to sell his diamonds, and was caught.

The bank got back its $10 million, but in the form of diamonds. No problem, the bank manager thought, he'll just sell them. Turns out, no one would buy the diamond from him - no one. Edward Jay Epstein has the story:

<em>Walter S. Fisher, the vice-president of Security Pacific, was charged with the responsibility of selling the 115000 diamonds. He realized that diamonds were not a standardized, or fungible commodity, as were gold, silver and platinum. Different appraisals of the same diamonds varied widely dependent on what the prospective buyer thought he could sell them for. And, though all the bank's diamonds were commercial stones for the mass market, Fisher found that it was extraordinarily difficult to find a buyer. None of the dealers in the United States were willing to buy such a large consignment of diamonds. Fisher found it necessary to deal through De Beers' main broker in London, I. Hennig. Finally and accept the terms dictated by the buyer, if he wanted to sell the diamonds. He then had to deliver the diamonds to an unknown corporation in Liechtenstein, G. S. G. Investments, without receiving any money for them for eighteen months. These were terms that the bank probably would not have accepted in selling any other commodity. With a flourish of understatement, the banker concluded, "Selling diamonds is far more difficult than I had anticipated."</em> (<a href="http://www.edwardjayepstein.com/diamond/chap20.htm" rel="nofollow">Source</a>)

Very cool article...couple points to consider:

as far as "scarcity" goes...with the growth of the "BRIC" (Brazil, Russia, India & China) countries middle classes, consumption of diamonds is out-pacing production (even more so as lately the mining companies are slowing output and conserving capital in this economy.

re/ "fake diamonds", I've seen a new brand called O'ku Lani (uses a non-diamond seed and a similar vapor diamond deposit process) that is very realistic. Unsure of the pricing but they have a website okulani.com.

finally re/ "Diamonds as a bad investment". True about the buy at retail and sell at wholesale, but a true investment grade diamond is priced well above $100,000, incredibly rare and can be bought for margins small enough that in a decade or so, profits will be made. PrivateDiamondVault.com is a spot to check out.

Thanks for an entertaining read...

that was an awesome article. sloane, other than the obvious cubic zirconia, they do make another stone now, i think its called diamonite or something similar, usually found in mail order catalogues, and i think the argos catalogue might do it. they're cheap, but look pretty good actually! (i think a lot of diamonds look like cubic zirconias anyway, as theres a heck of lot more of them about anyway!)

just a quick correction: the golden jubilee is the biggest cut diamond, but the biggest stone ever found was Cullinan, which weighed in at 3,106 carats rough.

De Beers doesn't really create scarcity anymore either. while they still have a rather impressive marketing arm, the days of the true cartel are gone. pretty much every mine out there is selling as fast as it's producing. the old days of stockpiling and releasing a dribble every now and then are gone.

Diamonds also glow faintly while they're being polished! It's the same property that causes wintergreen Lifesavers to spark, and duct tape to glow when you peel it in the dark.

<em>Can you smash a diamond with a hammer</em>

Yes - think you can. Diamond is hard, but brittle. They can and do chip and crack (so they're not "forever" in a sense)

1,2 and six were my favorite facts. Diamond used to make things with the second hardest rock. So the hardest thing is dimonds. but then it isn't the hardest. Wierd

I love diamonds. They're just pretty to look at and get lost in when the light hits them right. I'm a sucker for the things.

Interesting facts. I still don't understand the appeal of a diamond. Now gold or platinum as an investment I understand.

Well now I have fodder to reason with a woman come marryin' time. I can first give her a history of why diamonds are incorrectly assosciated with mairrage and romance, then present her with a cheap second hand one that I purchased at incredible discount. She's sure to say yes to any proposal then. She can't argue with reason right?

i know a jewelry designer that hates using diamonds, but most of her commisions end up being diamond based...i agree. most other precious rocks are better to look at.

Aww, I read the title wrong. I thought it said "10 Facts About Neil Diamond..."

Great info, though. I was reminded of Michael Rappaport's character in "Beatiful Girls" and his engagement ring which was "Champagne".

Red Diamonds are the rarest. Of the naturally occuring, I believe there's only been like five found.

However, when I hear about them, I can't help but think of big scary alien bugs pooping them out. (Readers of Dean Koontz may understand why - esp if they read the story 'The Bad Place').

In the 80s I used to visit deBeer's London Diamond Sorting Office to service equipment. They had boxes of uncut diamonds lying about - looks like swept-up broken windscreen. With a lump of blutak on the bottom of my toolbox I could have had loads out of there, but (apart from being wrong) I'd never have been able to sell them.
They had a whole corridor of Bridget Riley paintings - wonderul to dawdle in front of.

Cecil Rhodes was born in the town where I live now. I don't know why that should matter to anyone, but there it is.
