    How is that even edible?

Strikes me more as parental one-upmanship than actually doing something nice for the kid.

Parent: Look what I made for you and your birthday!
Kid: Can I eat it now?
    Parent: No!

It’s the best Mario cake I’ve ever seen, but then again I haven’t seen any others :)

You take pictures first, dig in after. Very edible. It might be a bit excessive, but if that’s what they wanted and they spent the time, money, and effort in getting it, more power to them.

If you haven’t seen the other mario cakes you need to look them up they are amazing. Glad i’m not the only game geek that would want one of these.

When does it cease to be a cake? I think if it’s inedible it shouldn’t count as a cake. If you saw the build video you’ll see that they used fondant around a wood base for a lot of it. While I think it makes for great art… Is it cake? For that matter is a rice krispies treat covered with fondant a cake? Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to eat one, so it passes the “is it edible test”, but is it a cake?
