Rickrolling Macy's Parade

Posted by Miss Cellania in Blog & Internet, Music on November 28, 2008 at 11:12 am

Rickrolling was taken to the largest audience yet Thursday at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City.

Instead of a performance by the characters of “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” onlookers were treated to a rendition of “Never Gonna Give You Up” by singer Rick Astley.

The switch happened on Thursday morning, during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The puppets on the float featuring the Cartoon Network show began to sing 1970s hit and TV theme song “Best Friend,” but stopped abruptly, revealing Astley, himself, dancing and singing to his signature tune.

I saw this and tweeted it right away. This is the first time I can remember being rickrolled on national tv!

Would've been funnier if they hadn't announced beforehand that Astley would be performing during the parade....

I agree on the bit about it probably appearing in Reader's Digest soon. I can imagine this popping up in the Sunday paper's Parade section as a "new phenomenon".

Yes, I agree with the article that now we can all move on with our lives.

    -2 points for Rick Astley's obvious lip-syncing.

Well, I guess this proves that with the power of Internet memes a singers career can be brought back to life on National TV.

Eh. He was barely "dancing," if that's what you want to call it, and he has a bad haircut. Nice lip-syncing job though.

    It was pretty lame,
He lip-synced the entire thing, and it wasn't a good rick roll at all, there was no element of surprise. The Tv totally announced that he was performing, personally I feel they ruined rick rolling entirely.

I didn't hear the announcement, so I was not aware he would be there. When I heard the music, I just face-palmed and started laughing. Point for Macy's.

I think this rickrolling is so dumb...I think Astley started it to get out of Obscurity land. Anywho, he didn't look that bad except I think he was wearing a bad toupee...oh yeah, obvious lip syncing.

Everyone lip synchs the parade. We thought it was hilarious considering we've been rick-rolled checking out the teasers for the upcoming Nip/tuck season.

Would have been way funnier if it wasn't announced and he would have put some effort into it. Or if the characters had been more excited.

Now that I think about it. Nobody would have known it was actually him if they hadn't announced it. I would have just thought it was some guy with bad hair lip-syncing.

I didn't hear when they announced him at the beginning, so I actually was surprised! Hilarious!
