50′ Tall Lava Lamp Planned for Soap Lake, Washington

By John Farrier in Everything Else on Nov 27, 2008 at 12:44 pm

With the approval of the city council, Soap Lake, Washington is planning to build a giant lava lamp in the center of town in order to draw tourists. The lava lamp, proponents argue, stands for Soap Lake’s unique geologic history. Also, it would be totally cool.

I like lava lamps. I have one. However, having a fifty foot tall one in the middle of…well… anywhere, is just an eyesore as far as I am concerned. Fifteen years ago, I might have thought differently, but fifteen years ago, I was perpetually stoned.

I love lava lamps. Next time I visit my hometown in Oregon, I’ll have to swing by there. I wonder how much energy that consumes?

Well, a giant lava lamp prop and a real, heated & wax-filled lava lamp are 2 different things. I believe snopes has the skinny on why a gi-normous lava lamp could not be made to work like a small one does (physics and chemistry and other stuff they don’t teach in the USA anymore).

Having worked on the airbrushing of the original, I am totally psyched to think that it might be going up in Soap Lake. I would make a major road trip to see that!

Could you imagine the type of heat needed to generate the flow for the lava wax? Egads!

I think that’s great lava lamp kinda sets the tone and the ambiance of a place makes it look great relaxing and entertaining.

    It’s a trap!

The moment they build that thing anyone who tries to leave their village will be chased back by a big lava bubble that comes out of the lamp.

heh heh, Technogirl. I am not a number! I am a free man!

I like the idea, even if the planning is taking a long time. I’d never heard of Soap Lake before, and now I want to take a daytrip there and see what’s up.

Well, I had no plans of going to Washington till now…booking my tickets now…yeah right, it may be neat but I don’t see how that will draw a lot of tourist.

I saw the picture without reading the post yet and I’m like “wow… worst Photoshop ever!!” LOL. This is a neat idea, but as others have said, it seems like a terrible waste of money.
