That's nothing, my grandma had two belly buttons!

One was her natural one, the other was from her hysterectomy she had when she was 21. It was located two inches below the natural one.

I had a friend in high school who didn't have a belly button. He had a surgery as a child which intersected that vicinity, and it was just a light depression instead of the usual innie. Since the surgery was done while relatively young and ran vertical, from all appearances there was nothing different except for the missing navel.

I had one, then I had an apendicitis, and when they sewed me back up, they ruined my belly button.
Maybe she had a botched appendectomy?

Umbilical hernia repair in childhood can also leave minimal/flat belly button. When I was pregnant, one of the nurses looked at my bump and said "Oh my god, you hatched!"

I had breast reconstruction after cancer and the surgeon used my lower abdomen to make the breasts. He had to make me a new belly button when all was said and done. I can still feel my real belly button. Phantom belly button? The new one is perfectly centered, too. : )

One of my aunts no longer has a belly button. I think she had an infection and the easiest option was to remove it.

This doesn't seem like a big mystery to me, but the publicity of people confused by it is probably great for her career.

Yeah. I know a little boy who was born by c-section because some of his internal organs developed outside of his body. He doesn't have a belly button, and since he was so young when it was corrected, he barely has a scar.

That is strange... I remember that Patricia Heaton didn't have a belly button at one point due to a tummy tuck... or tucks. But then she had one put in apparently. Maybe this is the same thing?

My wife's got hardly any navel - she had an outie as a kid but it kept rubbing on clothes so she had it flattened. When she was pregnant the nurses used to come and marvel at the unblemished bump.

Interesting! Perhaps she's a marsupial. Just kidding, of course. I know of two situations that could result in the absence of a pupik: 1. The navel is a type of scar; in some cases the umbilical cord detaches without leaving much of a trace, resulting in a very tiny or nonexistent navel. 2. There's a condition related to cleft palate in which the skin of the abdomen does not close in front. If the infant survives being born (The insides would be contained by a membrane & muscle in these cases), surgery is done to close up the opening. The child would have no belly button (the umbilical cord was attached at the membrane, not the skin). The child might be left with a large scar, but since this is done while the child is a newborn, in many cases the scar may clear up so much as to be unnoticeable. (Some forms of makeup may conceal it as well.) A woman with no navel appears in Alejandro Jodorowski's film "Holy Mountain," for those who can stand to watch it. (If you've seen the movie and missed that detail, she's an older woman who dances naked in the scene where we are introduced to the nine world leaders ["My planet is Mars," etc.]. I think she's acting like a dominatrix; I'll have to watch it again to be sure.)
