I saw a Santa Muerte shrine while I was in Mexico. Very creepy indeed! Especially when you don't know the context of it. People we're literally giving tributes to this skeleton looking thing and I suddenly thought I was in a "bad part of town".

The translation really comes out more towards "Holy Death" than Saint Death. Santa means Saint and Holy, so if you're in Tepito, el barrio bravo de la ciudad de Mexico, you get more of a holy aspect than a Saint (indicating endorsement by the Catholic church, or a nature of goodness)
