He is not the best. His Slap playing is indeed unique. Its obvious that he plays some kind of Indian Instrument. His style is unique. Its the first time Im seein somebody playin this Indian ta ka ta ka style. But Victor Wooten is the best

From his myspace site ( http://www.myspace.com/jayenvarma ) (pl google),its seen that he is the Fastest PERCUSSIVE Bass player and not Fastest Bass player (even though both have same or slightly different meaning)..Can edit the title description if needed…. And there it also reads that he has learned the indian Percussion instruments like Tabla. That could be the reason why he plays it like tabla. And there are also few songs in myspace in which he plays good grooves with clear notes without slapping… Song ‘Good times’..
Victor wooten’s style is invented by his brother Regi Wooten.. Pl listen what Victor himself says during the Bass day…..Thanx for posting the video

this dude is pretty good (mainly just percussive speed…nothing fancy with his fret hand), and mark king is good too, but I agree with brem…victor wooten is hands down the best. He’s got the total package: speed, mastery of multiple techniques, created his own techniques, etc. Even seen him play two basses at one time. Sick nasty. Also, I bet gmuller is right, this dude used to play tabla.

From the looks of it he used to play tabla. I recognize those strokes (Tira?) and he modulates around 4:00 like he’s playing a baya. Makes sense if its a raga/jazz fusion band. Neat stuff.

Yes, I find Jahem pretty lame too, but the fusion of Indian rage and Jazz, that’s cool!

The speed of how fast you can hit percussive notes doesn’t say anything how good the bassplayer actually are. It’s like saying this photocamera has 5 Megapixel without mentioning the quality of it optics. Much of the bassplayer depends on the style of bass of music you like. I am a longtime fan of Level 42, and what I like the most of the style of Mark King is that he can play very steadily moderate complex basslines without failing, but on the backside the songs of Level 42 doesn’t show any improvisation. Actually, the best songs of Mark are one the first albums when Level 42 didn’t had the success later received yet. Here are some great bass-solo’s of Mark King:

Some people may see Jaco Pastorious as the best Bass-player ever, as he removed the frets from the fingerboard of his bass, and invented playing bass using harmonics. “Portrat Of Tracy” is a masterpiece of him. To bad he died.

Qua technique I like Victor Wooten very much, he has a special technique to play triplettes, and doesn’t mind
demonstrating it and comparing it together with his older brother, and I really suggest Neatorama posting this link to a video of Victor Wooten Live at Bass Day 1998, where he plays very nice songs. He’s a unique person with great skills:
