Yeah, I'm half-Korean myself and I know many Koreans that do not want plastic surgery. But there are quite a handful of Koreans that I know that DO want surgery. Being "perfect" is the vision of a lot of Koreans. I know my mom wants to have plastic surgery especially on her eyes, she wants double-eyelids. She's always telling me how jealous she is because I have double-eyelids, but I don't see how they're so great. They're just eyelids to me. I don't look at someone and say "Oh I'm not talking to them because they have single-eyelids." But physical appearance seems to be a huge thing in Korea. Not necessarily just plastic surgery but being thin and what not.

Yeah, I was ranting, sorry. But I hope the woman gets some help, she needs it. Poor woman. :\

you know, i think at first: how can you feel bad for somebody who does this type of shit to themselves, then after thinking it over, i realize that this person probably has what we would consider a deasease, or disorder where she just can't stop, it is sad either way.

It's no different from all the diy-ers doing home improvement... except that home is your own body. The problem is when you start to use mud instead of a proper drywall... you know what I mean?

Oh double-eyelid, so that's what it's called.

I thought my friend was crazy for telling me that. Just never occured to me that people would think having a visible upper eyelid is more attractive... just like I think it's crazy some women think blown up balloon unnatural slug lips looks good... bleh.

Yes, I've been to Kangnam. Very affluent. Does not reflect the typical Korean, as you wouldn't expect the rich anywhere to to be an example of the normal. It's like saying that because a segment of the population that buys into all the iPhone stuff that everyone in that population does.

That may have been a bad choice of example since we're talking about Korea. Everyone over the age of 5 there has a cell phone (handuh-pone), and that's no exaggeration.! :)

@Byrd Brain - I lived there for a year and a half and know MANY people who have had surgery. Ever been to Kangnam?

Yes, there is a pervasive superficial social movement.
Think I'm lying, ask your friends about ??? and ???.

Instead of donating money for her physical condition - perhaps the money would be better spent on treating her psychological condition?

I imagine this may have been like a gambling addiction: it started out fun, but as each additional procedure left her looking less beautiful, she told herself "just one more" to correct the damage. Maybe she was hoping she would "hit the jackpot" and finally fix all the problems caused by the earlier operations, and then finally quit. But with the element of body dysmorphic disorder, she would never be satisfied enough, just like the compulsive gambler is never content with winnings because something better might be around the corner.

I'm speculating, but I suspect that's more or less how her thought process went. She probably feels like she needs an operation now more than ever, even if she knows on a medical level what it will do to her.

I suggest anyone who wants cosmetic plastic surgery to "feel better about themselves" donate instead to Doctors Without Borders so they can perform surgeries for cleft palates, etc.

That way you can REALLY feel better about yourself, and do some good, too.

stormie24, your sister visited South Korea and is somehow qualified to comment on the national psyche? I lived there for almost 3 years and never heard of nor knew anyone that ever had plastic surgery. Yes, I speak the language and yes, I interacted with the people there on a daily basis.

I feel so bad for people with that disorder. What's it called...body dysmorphic disorder? Or something like that.
And it usually happens to people who would be considered attractive too.

Anywho, I've also heard from a korean friend of mine that they're also obsessed with getting some kind of surgery to have a visible upper eyelid crease... or something like that b/c they think it looks better.
