Batman, The Dark Knight vs. Batman, Turkey

By Alex in Crime & Law, Film on Nov 12, 2008 at 1:56 am

The Dark Knight has a new enemy to battle: the mayor of Batman, Turkey!

Huseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of Batman, has accused "The Dark Knight" producers of using the city’s name without permission.

"There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us." [...]

The mayor is prepping a series of charges against Nolan and Warner Bros., which owns the right to the Batman character, including placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that the film’s success has had on the city’s inhabitants.

Taking offense, having nothing to do with the intellectual worth of an entity…

    What utter bollox.

According to latest archaeological discoveries, Batman’s (and also chronologically Asia Minor’s) first settlers date back to 10.000 BC.

But besides, the name “Batman” wasn’t given until 16 May 1990, when the region was large enough to become Turkey’s 72nd province. (The city was established in 1938, but with the name “Iluh”.)

“Batman” the character first appeared in May 1939.

Judging by these facts, we can easily say that Hüseyin Kalkan, who, despite being the mayor, has absolutely no idea of his own regions history, will lose this case.

The Australian city of Melbourne was previously named after Sir John Batman and known as Batmania. Similarly to Tasmania being named after Tasman.

That mayor needs to be forced to wear a Batman hoodie.

Well then along the same lines of idiocy, someone should file a countersuit on behalf of the western civilization as Turkey took–I assume without permission–the name of the bird we use annually as the symbol of thanks…
