"My Mom Is a Fob" Documents Funny Parental Sayings

As a child of an Asian immigrant, I was acutely aware of the struggles that my parents had to go through to learn the English language. The fact that they stepped off the plane and onto American soil 20 years ago with only an elementary understanding of English, but were somehow able to raise two boys, plus successfully own and operate a business still boggles my mind. Nonetheless, like many other parents who are Fresh Off The Boat (FOB), a thorough butchering of English was a common auditory occurrence in our household.

Enter My Mom Is a Fob, a blog dedicated to moments of, for lack of a better word, the "fobbishness" of parents. The site serves as a repository for e-mails, photos, and conversations with immigrant parents who probably mean well, but often run into problems expressing or understanding exactly what is going on in American culture. Interested readers can send in their own funny stories as well. I love this site not only because it makes me laugh, but because for most immigrant families, there's something about all of these stories that's not only plausible, hilarious, and endearing, but relatable too. For readers that like their funny sayings with a patriarchal spin, the blog creators have also set up My Dad Is a Fob.

Oh man! This is totally relatable to my experience with my folks. Immigrating to Canada when we were just kids was awesome. Having to explain to my parents what not to say and what it means was a part time job for me. :)

"My Mom is a FOB" is absolutely hilarious! Props to whoever came up with that idea! One of my favorite blogs "Lost in Emoticons" does something similiar, but is based on conversations through ichat...and of course uses emoticons :)
