The Manholiest Street in the World

Posted by Alex in Travel & Places on October 23, 2008 at 4:23 pm

A Japanese city planner must have really, really, really liked manholes. Behold a quiet, unassuming street in Tokyo’s Setagaya ward with the unique world record of being the manholiest street in the world:

Poor planning? Engineering gone wrong? Unconventional street decor? Whatever the explanation, this quiet residential street in Tokyo’s Setagaya ward boasts perhaps the highest manhole density in town, with 85 of them scattered along a 200-meter stretch of pavement. Fans of the curious street call it “Manhole Ginza.”

This sort of thing happens all the time here in Chicago, although perhaps not to quite the same extent. The city is above many tunnels, and whenever they have to repair a hole in the street (whether a pothole or a hole made by some sort of repair) they have to put in a manhole. Just filling the hole doesn't work.

Well, incase if there is a flood I'm sure pulling up all the manholes can stem the tide.

... or maybe they planned really well. It would seem that having all your maintenance access in one spot is more convenient than having it spread out over multiple blocks.

Limited parking; "$200 fine for parking over manhole" limits a cluttered street!

I hate to have to show all the underground utilities on this street on a set of construction plans. YIKES. Imagine what the surface would look like after DIGRITE (they locate underground utilities and paint the pavement to show them) did a locate on this street.

Maybe they just don't like little people. Verne Troyer must have nightmares about this street.

"Manhole Ginza" sounds like a porn actor's name.

Until 1997 the Manholiest street in the world was HWY 146 just south of Worcester MA in the USA. The speed posted was 45 mph but with all the exposed manholes you could barely travel at 10 mph w/o ruining your tires.

Perhaps when there's trouble happening on the surface...there'll be plenty of manholes to jump right in as a quick escape!!! he he he
