The Blah, Blah, Blah Letter Asking for Alumni Donation

Posted by Alex in Everything Else on October 21, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Framingham State College did something unusual in its effort to raise funds from its alumni – instead of a nicely worded letter begging for money, it sent a "blah, blah, blah" letter!

"Today, the fact of the matter is that deserving students need help to finance their education. Blah, blah, blah, blah blah," the letter said.

"I just think it’s unprofessional. It’s a poor representation of what we stand for. We pride ourselves on our image, and it failed," said Student Government President Steve Whittemore.

So how successful was the letter? About 6,000 students were solicited. Several dozen responded, and $2,000 was collected.

Interesting. One the one hand it would be kinda cool to get a letter like that, perhaps make me laugh and decide to donate.

    On the other hand...SLAP.

That's all people see anyway. Count me as one of the people that would donate because of a letter like that. It's honest and it made me laugh. In the same vein, I never give money to homeless people with signs that say they want money for drugs or alcohol. They're just confirming the preconception that they suck at life.

The letter was sent to 6000 people. $2000 was collected. That's a return of $0.33 per person... less than the cost of a stamp to send them the letter in the first place. Which means the campaign was a failure.

I wonder what the typical return for a normal letter is.

I think its just as unprofessional to solicit for money in a traditional letter. I dont need to read a page of ass kissing before they get to the point. Just send a post card that says we want money.

There does seem to be a sort of joke in the letter, that being if these "deserving students" had help financing their education they could have written a letter that consisted of more than a page full of "blah"

If that was the joke I dont think it was communicated very well.

That's all I see when I get to some of the long comments here, anyways.

I'd have sent a letter back:
"BLAH BLAH BLAH F-OFF! BLAH BLAH"

Something tells me that old Framingham State isn't quite at the standards of other New England institutions of higher learning, so you are going to be dealing with third tier students, alumni, and yes employees working on devising fund raising schemes.

    Morons.

Blah, blah, blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah? Blah blah blah blah blah... Blaaaah. Blah, blah blah blah. Blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Blah! Blah blah blah, right?
