Chimp Loves Tigers

Posted by Miss Cellania in Animals & Pets on October 11, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Zookeeper China York cares for all kinds of animal babies at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS) in South Carolina. Her assistant is Anjana, a chimpanzee she raised and who copies her caregiving behavior. Recently, the two have been caring for two white tiger cubs that were separated from their mother.

‘Mitra and Shiva, were born during Hurricane Hannah,’ said Dr Bhagavan, founder of TIGERS. “During that time everything flooded in the sanctuary and they had to be moved into the house as their mother became stressed.

‘It was important for their safety that they were separated.’

‘Anjana has been with China, side by side, ever since she was born and has joined her in caring and raising baby animals.

‘So she helped her and acted as a surrogate mother to these animals and she has done these same with these baby white tigers.

‘She gives them a bottle, lies with them and acts as a surrogate mother. She has a close contact and bond and gives them a nurturing.’

Mr. Zhu lives in the Zhejiang province in China. He was very impressed with the movie The Transformers -so much so that he built several transformers himself, out of old car parts! Zhu uses the giant transformers to promote his scrap metal business. Link -via Unique Daily

Waterdrop

Here is a fascinating and potentially sea sickness inducing project by Héctor Serrano Studio for Roca (a bathroom and accessories company) introduced at the 100% Design London exhibition. Called “Waterdrop” the project is a fascinating amalgamation of engineering, playing with light, and tricking the senses. Made up of hundreds of vertical rods with little blue lights attached to the top and run by motors to mimic the physics of a drop of water hitting a surface of liquid is certainly something to behold in person.

I can easily imagine myself with some zen or water soundtracks playing in the background as I watch this in a dark room. Of course, three things could possibly occur in this imaginative scene: first you may feel relaxed and at peace, secondly you could end up really needing to go to the bathroom, and third you may just end up feeling sea sick! Which may answer the reason why Roca funded this project…to make you run for the bathroom they built! ;)

Check out the link below for more info and pictures of the project!

A Tour of Intellectual History in Jay Walker’s Amazing Library

Posted by John Farrier in Science & Tech on October 11, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Internet entrepreneur Jay Walker used his fortune to create an elaborate library filled with intellectual achievements spanning human history, including a copy of Sputnik, the napkin that Roosevelt sketched out his plan for victory in 1943, and a field tool kit for Civil War surgeons. Walker describes his motivation:

“I started an R&D lab and have been an entrepreneur. So I have a big affinity for the human imagination,” he says. “About a dozen years ago, my collection got so big that I said, ‘It’s time to build a room, a library, that would be about human imagination.’”

Forget trading stocks, here’s something that’s far more interesting (though I’m not sure it’s much safer …)

Apparently, this is how the Swiss separate those who are smart from those who are too dumb to live in a fire!
