Photographer Erwan Fichou has a really neat gallery of photos he took of people wearing sweaters and coats made from … their pet dogs’ fur!

but gauldar, you don’t have to wait for the dog to die! you just use all that hair that accumulates in the brush. seriously. *retch*

This is no weirder than wearing wool or angora or cashere, except I’m sure your dog has a much better life than most large scale sheep (or rabbit or goat) operations.

i cant imagine it would be that bad…dogs smell from oils produced in there skin, not the fur itself. Northern breed dogs (huskies) dont produce these stinky oils. So there’s a woman here in Fairbanks, AK who spins yarn out of her sled dogs fur.

    still kinda weird though…

I was like Gauldar, and expecting a dead dog fur memorial of some sort. Reading the web site is reassuring. From French +/-:
“the photographed women, with the exception of a man, are posing with their selfmade clothes made out of their dog’s hair.
The hair, and more specifically the “under-hair” [called 'bourre in French, dog people please help!!] is gathered after grooming and kept until the right quantity for knitting the cloth is obtained.
A specialist person will put the hair in 50 grams [1.76 Oz] thread/yarn [?] and mail it back to the dog owner.”

Oh come on y’all…the “wool” is cleaned either before or after spinning it into yarn. It won’t stink.

Max, your human hair socks will itch like hell so if you make them just give them as a present to someone you don’t like! ;-)

I’m thinking about making homemade q-tips out of my bellybutton fuzz and some sticks from the backyard.

I currently live and work in Mongolia, here you can buy genuine dog skin products such as gloves and boots, the locals here swear by them as they are extremely warm in their -30 to -50 degree winters.

You DO NOT kill a dog for it’s fur, you use the fur that you cut or brush off the dog while alive!

Let’s all relax folks…some of you are not ‘getting it’. Years ago someone wrote a book called ‘knitting with dog hair’. There are some dogs who have long, beautiful, silky hair which can be spun (just like sheep’s wool) into knittable yarn…most specifically the ‘husky’ type dogs:(Samoyeds, American Eskimos, etc.) I have an American Eskimo dog. Her fur is long and pure white and the combings when I brush her out, look just like the finest angora or cashmere ‘yarn’. I’ve long thought how cool it would be (since I’m a knitter too) - to have a small scarf knit from her gorgeous fur…even if I just kept it with her framed photos as a memento of her. It always seems a shame to throw it out - and at times I’ve put out the combings in Spring for the birds to incorporate into their nests (they also fight over clothes lint from the dryer), and squirrels will rip strips from cardboard to build their nests. I wish I’d kept some fur from my beloved Eskie who passed away two years ago. For the record, these particular dogs NEVER get ‘wet doggy odor’, but always smell clean and fresh. One of my cats adores my dog, spending most of his time with his face nuzzled into her fur because she smells so good. Some people collect the combings, save enough to send off to spinners who card them into enough to make a ball or two of yarn - then incorporate them at the end of a scarf or sweater, or blend the yarn with another yarn - as a tangible reminder of their beloved pet. It could also be knitted into a cover for a small pet pillow/bed for a new puppy, as a far better comfort/transition for the pup away from its mother.

I AM WORRIED ABOUT HOW THIS MIGHT END UP HURTING DOGS. IF SOMEONE SEES IT AS A MONEY-MAKER, THEY WILL TAKE IT TO PRODUCTION… THAT MEANS DOGS BEING LOCKED IN CAGES TOO SMALL FOR THEM, NO LIFE, ABUSE…ETC… KEEP OUR DOMESTIC ANIMALS SAFE… BOYCOTT DOG FUR ITEMS!!!!!

I can only imagine how warm a dog fur coat would be! I think it’s a great idea. everytime i brush out my dogs, i think of things to do with their fur that when they are gone, i’ll have something to remember them by. i’ve heard of people making stuffed animals out of their pets fur as well. i DO NOT think this is cruel. it does not hurt your dog to brush it out, actually it is good for them! this does not mean that people are killing their dogs so they can have a nice fur coat! you p.e.t.a people make me sick! animals were put on this earth for our use, as long as they are used in a controlled way. i think it is wrong to just shoot an animal to just shoot it, but i enjoy hunting. it’s good tasting meat in the freezer! and this year, we plan on making deer skin mittens.
