I think we need to stop pointing the finger at men, and start pointing it at SOCIETY. Men are taught just as women are taught that women are sexual objects, and have to be thin to be worth anything. Sure. most men are jerks, but we feed into it too. Society is a piece of shit, and affects all of us.

Which leads us to the question: what are the other reasons that girls (and women) become cheerleaders, instead of joining, say, the math club?

Why don’t they try to become football players, or excel in other types of gymnastics?

What is it that draws them to the tradition of leading cheers, of jumping up and down in skimpy outfits, in front of an audience? They could be expanding their knowledge of astronomy, learning how to repair automobiles, or enjoying a good game of chess.

Cheerleaders are no more objectified than the players themselves - big, stupid guys who get paid tons of money to knock each other down and move a ball around a field - that is the stereotype, isn’t it? Oh, but that’s okay to objectify them, because men aren’t important…

I think this is wonderful - not all girls become cheerleaders so they can be objectified.. their old uniforms were made of.. latex.. or something of the sort - can’t be at all comfortable when you’re working as hard as they do - the new ‘temporary’ outfits are still quite sexy!

aside from the immature banter– regardless of whether this cheerleading squad made the “right” decision of dressing their showgirls in something a little more modest or not, there are still tens of thousands of other little girls around the country running around believing looks are their only positive characteristics. and those people who support this “freedom of expression” really have bigger problems on their hands than looking pretty.

and jimbo– last time i checked, my stomach has not come anywhere close to my steering wheel. it’s called “eating healthy and having dignity for oneself.”

I do in fact understand some of the problems you larger women have fitting into a normal world.

I understand why your shirt gets worn out at the belly button because of the rubbing of the steering wheel in your car.

I had forgotten the pain you must suffer for having to pay extra to fly.

There is always hope for you as long as the US is full of 20 million Mexicans.

There’s no such thing as absolute equality. If there were, we would all be one gender, one size, one shape, one colour.

Men and women need to learn to embrace diversity. Women who get upset about beautiful women need to explore their own feelings about why it upsets them. To deny a woman a chance to wear a skimpy outfit is simply to deny her her rights as a woman to show off her body.

As for the limited options that women have for clothing choices, look at the options men have available for clothes - different coloured pants. A man can wear pants, a shirt, and a tie in a business environment (sometimes a golf shirt), but in the same environment, a woman can wear shorts, a skirt, capri pants, a dress, a denim dress (where a man couldn’t wear jeans), a kilt, high heels, sandals, a blouse, a really really frilly blouse, plus clothes that look like men’s clothes… the list goes on.

Maybe that’s the reason why there are more transgendered men trying to become women than women trying to become men.

i don’t think my statement was that overboard.. i mean, it’s completely true what i said about male/female apparel. if you are a guy, i encourage you to walk into the juniors department of any retail store and really LOOK at the options we have to call “clothing”. then walk over to YOUR section and compare. if you need to repeat the cycle to understand what i’m saying, feel free. that’s why i would say men hate shopping: they have never had to go through the anguish of finding an outfit that fits in all the right places. you have never been bra shopping. have you ever worn a thong? have you worn high heels? have you plucked your eyebrows or shaved your legs? i would assume most of the answers to these questions are “no” because guess what? you’ve never had the social pressure of living up to any of that crap. i wouldn’t consider myself a feminist, rather, someone who believes in absolute equality. i would stand up for a man in a split second if he was being put down by society, take for example all the “dumb husband” commercials. you know the ones… where the women in the commercial make the man out to be completely clueless and stupid. it’s wrong and paints the wrong picture of a true man. same for women. they should not be treated as objects any more than men should not be treated as dumb animals. go ahead and call me a feminist, but i’m just standing up for my fellow females who know what the hell i’m talking about. if you’re a guy, you have NO IDEA what i’m talking about (unless you’ve taken women studies classes or have engulfed yourself in equal rights) and have nothing to say to me.

jimbo, if they’ve got what? what is it that they’ve “GOT”? sex appeal? boobs? a va-jay-jay? sorry to reveal the secret, but ALL women have boobs and pink tacos. if you want to see women waggling their boobs in your face, there is an industry that generates 1/3 of the income on the internet. it’s called “porn.” check it out. it’s hard enough to dress appropriately as a female and NOT be expected to show some amount of skin. clothing manufactureres make t-shirts and jeans for men, while they make skirts the size of belts and “shirts” that don’t cover enough to be appropriate at grandma’s house. it’s hard enough to dress appropriately AND be appreciated by our male counterparts. just because you’ve “got it” doesn’t mean you have to show it around like you don’t have an ounce of respect for yourself. anyway, sorry to attack you. it’s just the exact mentality you displayed that perpetuates the oppression of women. stop it, please. and i hope you don’t treat your female counterparts with such disrespect.
