Polar Bear Scare

By Miss Cellania in Art, Crime & Law on Sep 17, 2008 at 10:31 am

The bomb squad responded to call about a suspicious package yesterday near the Columbia Heights Metro station in Washington, DC. Citizens had observed a polar bear rummaging in a trash can. They said he had been there for hours. The Metro station and the surrounding area were evacuated. Ambulances and fire trucks were on hand to respond.

Onlookers watched a bomb technician in a blast suit walk slowly toward the bear, then pounce and cut it open. He pulled out wads of newspaper until the big, white head flopped over.

The bear was a mannikin mannequin. Was it street art, a political statement, or both? Link

The DCist believes that the artist is Mark Jenkins. Link -via Arbroath

Bostonians can now breathe a sigh of relief as they’re not the only major city which has freaked out over nothing.

It was street art of course! And it conveyed a very alarming message, that polar bears are loosing their homes due to the melting of the arctic ice. Sad stuff really.

I’ve never seen “mannequin” spelled like that. I learn something new here just about every day!

Sure this wasn’t in Boston? They are experts at confusing unusual things for bombs.

I live in DC and that was in DC (you can see the Washington Examiner for the article on it as well). I actually find it quiet amusing that we are all so scared of the littlist things. A polar bear mannequin??? I wonder if the artisit or whomever put it there, did it just for that purpose. To make us realize that we over analyize and think everything is terrorist related….which actually the stuff we freak out about more often than not, is nothing at all.

So was the mannequin actually rummaging? Also, why would cops assume there was a bomb in it? Most importantly, did anyone videotape this hilarity?

Actually, I think you *can* spell it “manikin” or “mannikin.”

I wonder how they’d respond to a electroluminescent wire based sign that simply said “THINK”

haha, this just goes to show then mentality of the people of the USA
“a bomb technician in a blast suit walk slowly toward the bear, then pounce and cut it open. ”
    That is so violent!
