After reading our post about the shipbreaking yard in India, Neatorama reader Stephen Douge went looking on Google Earth and found an unlikely customer: an aircraft carrier! Thanks Stephen!

That aircraft carrier is the ex ARA 25 de Mayo, from the Argentinian Navy (previously british and then dutch). It was decommisioned and sold in the 90′s and towed to India.

    More pictures of the ship:

The French tried to scrape their Clemenceau aircraft carrier in India, but asbestos environmental/political concerns cancelled the project and the ship had to be towed back.
    Another lost fight ;p

Looks like the Doorman (Dutch), with the angled deck. Venerable (Brit) was a straight deck prior to delivery to the Dutch. At least according to links in Wikipedia.

You’re almost right! The ship on the photo is NAeL Minas Gerais, the Brazilian aircraft carrier that was written off in 2002. The Minas Gerais is the former HMS Vengeance and a sister of the 25 de Mayo/Karel Doorman. The photo was taken in 2004. In 1996 I sailed on this ship for five days. She was the oldest active carrier in the world, built in WW2.
