Woman Gave Birth to Own Granddaughter

A 61-year-old woman in Japan has just given birth … to her own granddaughter!

The unnamed woman, who is now thought to hold the record as the oldest Japanese woman ever to give birth successfully, undertook the controversial treatment at the Suwa Maternity Clinic – an institution that has already sparked fierce debate over the rights and wrongs of surrogate motherhood. [...]

Yesterday’s successful treatment involved the woman having her daughter’s already fertilized egg implanted in her womb. The entire family is understood to have agreed to undergo the process, despite its difficulties, because the woman’s daughter was born without ovaries and unlike many young women in Japan, was keen to have children.

She was born without ovaries so the egg couldn't have been her daughter's, right? I skimmed the article but found no explanation of the contradictory paragraph.

Eggs-actly. No ovaries means no eggs. Unless something went terribly wrong in the translation. Are you sure this wasn't China where there was a stand-in egg that was cuter than the original?

I once met a woman (here in the U.S.) who got ovarian cancer. One of her eggs was saved before her ovaries were removed, and it was fertilized by her husband's sperm and then implanted in her mother's uterus (her mother had to undergo some hormonal treatments to halt menopause etc.). So this was a real case of a woman giving birth to her own grandchild.

Would've been easier to just buy a baby, wouldn't it?

Agreed. Born without ovaries means no eggs. Something is wrong with this story.

LOL... eggs without ovaries. Nice trick if you can do it.

In any case, this is a great example of someone not taking the hint. If you're born without ovaries, maybe (just maybe) you're not supposed to have any children!
