Man Caught Record Fish with a Barbie Rod and Reel

Posted by Alex in Sports, Toy & Video Games, World Records on August 22, 2008 at 6:31 pm

A North Carolina man has just set a new state record for largest catfish, which he caught … with his granddaughter’s pink Barbie rod and reel!

David Hayes doesn’t usually fish with a pink Barbie rod and reel, but when his 3-year-old granddaughter Alyssa handed him her fishing pole, he used it to haul in a state record channel catfish.

"She said, ‘Papa, I gotta go potty. Hold my fishing rod,’" Hayes said. "She wasn’t in the house a few seconds when the catfish took off with the bait."

The catfish weighed 21 pounds, 1 ounce, which has been certified as a state record by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

I would think a 21-pound fish could snap a cheap plastic rod. Was it diseased or something?

I caught an 8 pound Bass with my grand sons Sponge Bob pole made by the same company.
Those little poles are actually very rugged.

This just goes to prove that it doesn't matter whether you have a $500 set of gear or a cane pole and a few nightcrawlers...fish will still bite.

    "Barbie rod and reel"
Looks like the toy industry has been experimenting since days of dolls and cowboy outfits...

I wanted to let Mr. Hayes know that he is not alone in using Ms. Barbie to catch outstanding fish. Here is my story. On the early morning of July 28, 2008 my cousin and I went catfishing at a state park in mid- Ohio. After casting out the larger poles, the only pole left in the truck was my daughter's pink Barbie pole that my wife had just purchased for her the day before. I tought what the heck and tied on some buzz bait an started to cast. On the third cast and not even having the drag set, I got a hit that I had never got with my $100. plus fish pole's. I had to jump into the water to land a 17' 4.1# small mouth bass. This pole is having a season. Maybe they should start using it on the Bass Curcit. LOL BAR
