i'm from warrenton and the jamaican bobsled connection is a totally new story for me. i'm not entirely surprised, as our town has many weird stories that leave us wondering....

I remember watching Eric swim on TV. I suppose they ran the clip during something, as I'm pretty sure it wasn't the primetime event. Eitherway, I cried and cried for at least an hour at his courage. Call me crazy, but he has a special place in my heart. Truly an Olympic hero. I was afraid to watch that clip again just now because I didn't want to start crying at work (tears of happiness of course). Thanks Neatorama for brightnening up my day a bit.

The '88 Calgary Olympics were a watershed in at least one way - with Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled team at least some folks participated to have fun. Since that time the OOC has limited participation to those who have a chance of winning. Nothing like seeing a bunch of wind up dolls going thru their program almost perfectly every time. And it's getting worse ... Usain Bolt has been criticized for getting excited when he wins.There will undoubtedly be a requirement for appropriate stoicism at all future games.

Love the Eric the Eel video - Roy and HG are awesome comedian commentators. They're sorely missed from the current Olympics (and pretty much yet another reason why I have no interest in watching a minute of it!)

I was there for Eddie's jump! My mom was British, and she was the local liaison for the British Cross Country team in Canmore. The family came into Calgary to watch Eddie! Excellent! I was, like, 9 years old at the time. .

A mate of mine in Australia was a member of the Aussie bobsleigh team, and as part of the partnering of 1st world countries with 3rd world countries, they actually donated the bobsleighs, both the dry runner sleigh and the actual Kresta run version.

I dunno about theese American business men but the sleighs were peculiarly Australian.
