I like how Frances Griffith admitted it was all a hoax, except for the one picture that had real fairies in it. They’re clearly more cutouts, only shot at a long exposure and then removed partway through. Bravo to her for trying to keep the mystery alive, though.

Man or Monster: If the cutouts were removed in the middle of the shot, you would see blur or streak marks from the point of the ‘fairies’ starting point to the direct of which they were removed. If they are fake, I would be more willing to bet they were made of wet papyrus (wet for the seethru affect and papyrus because it was stronger and could hold its shape when wet)

I would have to say the Piltdown man would be tops because it was actually taught as fact in science books. Only it was an “early human” fossil that turned out to be mixed bones including that of an Orangutan jaw. It took the scientific community 30 years before they admitted they were fooled and it was a hoax.

I remember reading a news item many years ago about a village that sat at the foot of a dormant volcano. I don’t remember where it was, but it may have been in South America. Geological evidence proved the mountain had been a volcano, but it had not erupted in recorded history. One morning, the villagers awoke to find black smoke belching from the volcano’s crater; they were in a near panic until investigation revealed someone had apparently been dumping old tires in the crater for a long time, & then set them on fire on April Fool’s Day.

A guy made a machine that he claimed could turn one dollar bills into hundred dollars bills. After demonstrating the contraption, the guy would offer to sell it for a couple of thousand dollars and some suckers actually bought it. The machine had blinking lights on it and a secret compartment stocked with a couple of C-notes — which ran out as soon as the buyer got the machine home. Read about it in a book about the FBI.

We seem to have missed one of the biggest in the U.S. history.Years after this broadcast several movies and dramatizations would follow. After the broadcast federal laws were resurrected to protect the public, and prohibit any hoaxes like this to happen again. Orson Wells’ “War of the world” that was brocaded as a real invasion from outer space on radio, and sent a panic through out the country.

WMD’s were never found, but everything to make them was! And, obviously you were never been over there because regardless of what MSNBC puts on the news until one of the so called non-terrorist/extremist shoots at you, you have no place to call them anything other than terrorist. A sixth hoax currently being run — and quite an amazing one — is the story that 19 “highjackers” managed to seize four planes on Sept. 11, 2001, and with two of them destroy the Two tallest buildings of the World Trade center in New York City, and also a third building – building 7 – which they didn’t even hit! Experts and non-experts alike are still trying to point out to the public that the buildings were obviously and necessarily professionally demolished, and even though none of the characteristics of these building collapses fit what would happen to a burning steel-framed building, (no steel framed buildings before of since have EVER collapsed because of a fire) and ALL the observable characteristics of these collapses DO fit a controlled demolition, many people are so deeply deceived that they choose the hoax story instead! War of the Worlds was not a hoax….sheesh. It was simply a radio broadcast that many people tuned into in the middle of. Those who were listening to the radio the whole time were well aware from the start it was just a radio play.

I once went to a college Halloween party as a blind man that thought he was dressed as a Cowboy. Essentially I was dressed normal and my brother (that went to the University of Delaware where the party was) went in before me and told everyone he didn’t have time to set me up with a costume so just go along and I would never know.

The picture of the Loch Ness monster that the guy took and about 40 years later admitted it was an upside down toy submarine or something. I read a book that had that picture as part of its proof of Nessie. Also the Piltdown man and several other of the evolutionary finds that were later discredited would be interesting to look into.

This is the biggest hoax in my opinion, and what I will state below is based on fact. Look it up.
Global Warming. When the dinosaurs roamed the earth the climate was MUCH warmer than it is now. From what I understand (of course you libs can correct me if I’m wrong), they weren’t driving around SUV’s, drilling oil, starting fires, or using incandescent bulbs. Maybe they just released a bit too much methane gas. Climate change is real, and it is natural. There is nothing that MAN can do about it except to move if you don’t like where you’re currently living. Scientists agree that there WAS global warming up until 1998, since which the planet’s temperature has remained stable. Otherwise, can anyone explain to me please why it’s been so pleasant this summer to sleep with my windows open? I haven’t moved…. Thank GOD for global COOLING! Which, by the way, “nearly all” scientists agreed with in the 1970′s. Yes, they wanted to put soot on the polar ice caps in order to bring the temperature up to what they thought it should be.
Oil is also in good supply here in the US. We have oil wells that have been dug but are not being pumped. They are capped and ready to go. The GOVERNMENT just needs to get out of the way, and we CAN in fact, see a difference in the price of gas within 2 weeks time. It’s up to US (we, the people) to tell our elected representatives (who represent us, the people) that they need to do their job.
Oh, hey, when was the last time Al Gore robe the bus? When did he last ride a bike? His house uses up more electricity than my whole apartment building. Chew on that. Then give me a Nobel Prize.

If you took the time to check into it instead of taking the word of people who don’t know better, you’d find that prophesies, histories, archeology….ALL of them PROVE that Jesus was real. If you read in books of the Bible like Exekial, Daniel, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, you would find that they almost PERFECTLY tell the story of Jesus and his life and death AND resurrection-IN DETAIL-and they were written Hundreds of years before Jesus Christ was born. The Orson Welles “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast was not a “hoax”. They actually repeated throughout the broadcast that it was just a dramatization and not real, but some people just didn’t get the message. Welles himself was reportedly shocked that so many people believed that it was real.

Orson Welles’ broadcast was no hoax, it was clearly announced as Mercury Theatre and was their Halloween program. What misled some folks was that there were no commercial sponsors, so the narration continued uniterrupted. My father loved that show.

Actually, you’re both wrong about the fairies photo. The much simpler technique is a double exposure. You put the camera on a stable surface/tripod. If the lighting calls for, say, a 1/10 second exposure, you shoot 1/20 once with the cutouts in the shot. Then you remove them and shoot 1/20 again on the same frame of film. The background is properly exposed, but you only get a ghostly half-exposed image of the subject. This technique has been used since the invention of photography to trick people into believing in ghosts and other paranormal phenomena.
The Cottingley fairies is an interesting story. At one point, they actually had Kodak authenticate the photos, which gave them added credibility in the eyes of the public. Of course, all Kodak said was that nothing had been done to retouch the film. They said nothing about the authenticity of the subject. To this day, the residents of the town will swear up and down that they have fairies living in the woods.

I love how this friendly topic has been co-opted by right wing extremists, left wing liberals, atheists, religious extremists, scholars of world religion, evangelists, foreign policy experts, military strategists, conspiracy theorists, the guy who knows the “real” story on oil prices, the other guy who is a global warming expert, the guy whose comments hint subtly at white supremacy but won’t come right out and say it, antisocial paranoids (it’s obvious who you are), and some skank who wants us to see her naked on her website. I find it curious that some people call 9/11 a hoax. Pretty good hoax to watch planes crash into the buidings, and see the flames erupt as aircraft parts are falling. Must have been mass hypnotism at work. Anyone who understands engineering would know that because of the way that the buildings were built, the way that the fire retardent was not properly applied, and the subsequent fires causing the floors to fail, caused each floor to collapse onto the next lower one, and on, and on…
Religion has always been a point of contention and argument with people. I’m not religious nor anti-religious. There are points that have brought up questions. Two people populate the earth (Adam & Eve)? Giant flood and then Moses & his wife, and their sons & daughters, etc., re-populate the earth?
There have been may theories about the events that occured in the bible (a book that was put together from the writings of many people): parting of the Red Sea might have been a local weather event, giant flood was a local river flooding event, etc.
Whether it be fact or fiction, no one can validate the events or who wrote the books (bible, qoran (sp), etc.), religion is a way to control people and events. It is one way to get people to commit good and/or evil acts in the name of god.

You can add to this that it is in the APA’s(American Psychiatry Association) code of ethics(section one; number 2) to respect all people’s creed(religious profession). As a practitioner I think it is a shame that you are either lieing about being a psychiatrist or you are in direct violation of your training and ethical codes. Please either quit lieing or go into a job where your belief doesn’t threaten the ethical treatment of your patients or the advancement of psychology as a whole.

I’m kinda in between on the religion debate Here are my reasons:
A) Yes, there is a God/Gods/Higher Power. How else could our world be created? I pretty sure that there wasn’t some sort of big explosion, and suddenly an endless universe came to be.
B) No, there isn’t a God/Gods/Higher Power. Look at all the other religions we’ve beaten down (ex. Greek/Roman Mythology). We say it was because of their own misunderstanding that they created their Gods, but we sorta created our God/Gods/Higher Power to fill in the blank spots too, didn’t we?
