I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equalled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.

"Arms, guts, thighs and bones are flying through the air.
And whole human bodies too, attracting big flies."

Sounds like a great song for a romantic mix tape.

is it in german that they are called the doodle sack?

Anyhow as both a Scot and an Irishman, I love the souind of the pipes.

The Scots version has always been seen as being more of a martial instrument, while the irish pipes, by dint of being played in a sitting position, were not.

The skirl of the pipes will always hold sway over most Celtic peoples. Hell they are played from Islamabad to the arctic circle, so they have got to be douing soemthing right.

Thanks Mr. Pumpernickel!

I had the pleasure (displeasure) of hearing the bagpipes first hand - from a distance of oh, 30 yards or so, it was still very, very loud.

Classic joke: "The Irish gave the Scots the bagpipe, and the Scots still haven't gotten the joke."

Bagpipes were common instruments in all parts of Europe at various times.
