I think you should mention Smoky the yorkie became` a war dog on Luzon when she saved 40 US Warplanes and 250 groundcrewmen from possible desruction by pulling a string with vital phone lines attached through a 70 feet long and 8" high culvert under the only taxiway protecting the planes. The planes to be operational would have had to be moved to along the airstrip that the enemy was bombing everyday. Men would have had to dig up the culvert by hand to lay the wires, a three day task. Smoky accomplished the task in two minutes even though she had to crawl through sifted sand piles up to 4"s high every four feet

When I think of beloved dogs, "Beautiful Joe" is the first one that comes to mind. Think "Black Beauty," only with a dog as the main character. First published in 1894, it is based on the true story of a dog rescued from a brutal master. It helped to raise public awareness of the need for humane treatment of all animals. Their website is www.beautifuljoe.org.

Great post. Owney's collar thing is adorable. I couldn't even teach my dog to lay down, so yours are probably better off than that at least.

In Australia we have a famous very old country song called "the dog sat on the tuckerbox", based on a poem about the true event. (a tuckerbox is a food carton used by pioneer travellers and soldeirs etc).
Its a bit of iconography up there with Waltzing Matilda.
Theres even a statue of him at the place it was supposed to have taken place.

I never really understood what the fuss was about a dog sitting ona big old food carton and why the poem and song was so angry and bitter, til i dug up original version.

It wasnt ON it.. it was IN it.. and he didnt SIT or SAT, seems in name of decency an aspirant was lost.
"The Dog S-at In the tuckerbox" now i understood why my grandad would laugh himself silly.

I just got back from a holiday in Japan. there's a statue in Shibuya of a dog called Hachiko. His master was a professor at a university. Hachiko would accompany him from his home to the station every morning, and be back to meet him at 5 pm. His master died at work one day, but Hachiko waited patiently at the station for him for nine years, eventually when Hachiko died, they made a statue of him, which got melted down in the war, but you can still go and see it now.

Since the topics are Christopher Moore and canines, read "Coyote Blue" sometime. Another dog story I have heard and have been meaning to research is a dog named Old Drum that has a statue dedicated to it in Warrensburg,MO. The story goes that there was a property dispute for whatever reason and a farmer was wanting this dog. The lawyer in the case made the argument that the dog was not a mans piece of property but mans best friend. Supposedly that's where the saying came from, but this is stories I have heard from drunks in bars.

3 things

Firstly, it's a West Highland Terrier, not a Scottie Dog.

The accepted contraction is a "Westie".

Secondly, i9s Balto that well known in the states? I worked on the animated film of Balto and it was only after that I realised he was real.

Thirdly, The Yorkshire terrier, or Yorkie always looks like Chewbaccas c*ck to me.
